Q: where is the automator documentation?

Apple provides very little.  There's this, and Automator's Help files, but not much more.

Try these. The first is not hosted by Apple. The second is on the Apple Developer Site. You do not need to be a paid developer to access these. Use your Apple ID and password, or ... not.

1. Mac OS X Automation. Note the Automator link. There is also an over-view video on Automator circa 10.6 Snow Leopard. British accent.
2. Mac Developer Library. Enter Automator or AppleScript in the search box. Automator documents appear 5 years old.

Apple's totally remiss in providing details. These are dated, but should get you started:
