Hi,

I just re-installed the system and all applications from scratch. However, when launching Aperture it just freezes with the "opening aperture library' message. I re-intalled aperture (donwloaded from apple website instead of using software update), repaired permissions, rebuilt aperture library etc. Any ideas what causes this issue and how to resolve it? B.T.W. Aperture worked just fine before re-installation.

Thank you.

How large is the Library?  If needing any upgrade to the library to match the version of Aperture, it can take quite a while before it can be opened.

What happens if you hold down the Option while clicking to launch Aperture?  Does it take you to a dialogue where you can choose to create a new Library?

    Hi.

    Thanks for a prompt reply.

Initially I thought it may be a problem with the library. So I moved it to an extrernal drive and launched Aperture with no library file in the Pictures folder. No change, it does create a new library in the Pictures folder (6.8MB) but it hangs at the same point, i.e. 'opening aperture library'.

Holding Option key gives me a choice which library I'd like to open. Choosing 'create new' does not help. Aperture stops responding.

Create a New User account on your Mac, and as that New User launch Aperture and see if the New User can create and open a Library?

Surprisingly yes, I can! But what do I do now, should I just move my profile to the new user account?

No intent for you to do that.  Let me locate a plist to purge, and watch for an edit to this post.  This was just a test to make sure the application is OK.

Open your User Library.  If not familiar, then after clicking on the HD to get a Finder Window, choose your Home folder name Icon, then hold down the Option key while clicking on the Go command in the Command Bar and choose Library.  Once the Library is made visible to you, locate the Preferences folder, and then the file named com.apple.aperture.plist.  Drag that file to the Desktop (for later trashing no doubt).  Now launch Aperture again with the Option key held down.

I removed the plist file and re-launched aperture with Option key. I got a Welcome to Aperture screen and then (after clicking continue) the dialog box to choose a library. I chose 'create new' and Aperture stopped responding.

Did the above again but this time I chose the existing library. No change

Remove the plist, again, and shut down the computer.  Restart, and Repair Permissions.  Try to then launch Aperture, again with the Option key held down.

You might take a look at the Console log if this happens again.

I had same issue.  Its a simple fix - just go into system preferences and log out of your MobileMe account.  Its now defunct, so will create havoc if you're logged in.  See this discussion of same problem: Aperture 3.3.2 hangs on launch (library issue)

    Hope this helps you.

I had a mobile account but now I'm fully migrated to OSX Lion and using iCloud.. so MobileMe isn't available. I do seem to recall Aperture had it appearing in the list before - and I found some mobileme.plists hanging around..

Still.. can't get it to start..
