Q: Im running OS X 10.3.9 and need an up to date version of flash.

I cannot install newer versions of flash because they do not support OS X 10.3.9. I need flash to listen to online radio and view certain web pages. I was wondering if there was a way to get later versions of flash for this OS. If not how can i get these web pages to work with my version of flash. Right now I am running Flash-player 9.280.

    Hi.

If you aren't set against it, perhaps you would consider upgrading the OS on your iMac to 10.4.

This would allow you also to step up to the next version of Flash Player 10.1.102.64, available for download from Adobe's site here...  Adobe Archived Flash Player versions

You don't say which model iMac you have, but if your avatar is any indication it's an older PPC G3?

Does it meet the System Requirements listed here...   Mac OS X 10.4 System Requirements

    Just food for thought.

    I hope it's helpful.

Yes its a PPC G3. I have plenty of RAM (576 mb) but i only have 2.3 GB free disk space (9.56 GB overall). But when i install Tiger i can create free space by deleting Panther, right? I am concerned that Tiger will slow down my pc a bit. And its already pretty slow.

Also i hear good things about Panther and want to play around in this older OS. Is there away to copy the OS like in Windows. I don't have the install disc.

That being said, the fact that i don't have an upgraded version of Flash is really difficult to deal with.

Thank you for your help. I'll look in to it.

Tiger may actually run faster than Panther on your G3.

If not how can i get these web pages to work with my version of flash.

The latest version of Flash requires an Intel CPU, but you probably already know that. It is unlikely that upgrading to 10.1.102.64 will do much for you in the way of enabling most of today's Flash content.

Do you also have a PPC G3?

Is that so? Then my question would be: is it worth it to upgrade to Tiger? Or should i just stick with Panther and find ways to make it work?

Yes, but I no longer use it.

Though Tiger will most likely result in an overall performance improvement, I don't recommend upgrading your G3 to Tiger for the sole purpose of being able to view Flash content. You will be disappointed in its performance. Most Flash content available today will require an Intel version of Flash Player.

The problem has less to do with the limitations of the G3 than it does with the tendency for everyone developing Flash content to believe we all have 50 Mbps Internet and high end workstations capable of viewing 1080p video. Twelve years ago there was no such thing.

    I Wish that wasn't so.

If what you say about Flash 10.1 not being much better is true. Then i don't really need to upgrade. But is 10.4 Tiger a better OS? I am wanting to explore this older OS (Panther) to experiance simpler times when an OS just gave you what you needed. But is that worth my time? Or could i get the same experience from Tiger?

Can you recommend any resources for uprgading my PPC G3 and using Panther in 2012?

The answer depends on what you intend to accomplish with your G3. You can certainly use it for everything it was ever designed to do, including playing iTunes music, editing iMovies, general word processing and Internet use, etc. That's pretty much what I did with mine. You can get the most life out of it by upgrading its hard disk (you can install as much as 120 GB as I recall) and adding more memory, as much as it can hold.

Tiger is probably the best OS for the G3, if you can find it. For memory and HDD upgrades, go to OWC / MacSales:

    Thanks bro.

This is my first Mac and I am really starting to enjoy it. I am surprised at how much this older machine, and operating system, has to offer. Compared to Win 98 (which i grew up on).
