Q: Selected folder is not writable

Hello,

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, Preview now gives this error when trying to scan: "Selected folder is not writable."

I have read other posts on this issue, and using "Image Capture" I was able to scan. Image Capture and Preview interfaces look identicle excpet for one small thing. Image Capture lest you pick the detination of the scan. Preview does not.

I thought that after using Image Capture and setting the location for the scan, that Preview would then use the same diestination. Not true. How can I set the default location so that Preview works again?

Thanks

    Hi Dirk,

I have a photosmart as well, please check your updates, I recently updated the HP drivers, which also should fix the problem.

    Regards, Jan

The HP update doesn't provide the fix for this problem. This problem is a Preview and sandboxing problem.

I also had the same issue, after installing Mountain Lion.  But to fix, I actually went completely off Preview. Instead, using an HP Photosmart 7510 AirPrint-enabled printer/scanner, I used the HP menu and chose "Scanner" (far right of the toolbar).  Just make sure you quit Preview first.

From there, the window may at first appear small and the buttons may seem "greyed out" -- just make the window bigger and trust me the buttons work.  From there you'll see the familiar scan overview and settings that used to be seen with Preview.  It's very simple to scan to any file type etc direct to your machine.

    Good luck!

This is what worked for me: Uninstall all printer software (HP in my case). Restart the computer.

Reinstall software through apple software update.  Make sure that the printer is back in system settings, turn on preview and it should work now.

    Siebe,

    Groet, Jan

    John,

I have tried doing this but moving the library/contents to trash and it didn't work again. Where would I find the delete for this? I ended up putting it back....

    Hi  all

If like me none of the solutions on this page worked, I found one that did here:

    http://macosx.com/threads/image-capture-permissions-problem.319624/

Create a new folder in desktop, and it will scan into that without the error message, even though it won't scan to the desktop.

Not ideal but better than nothing.

Instead of moving the folder try changing the permissions. Control click the folder and select get info. You will need to have your admin account login and password.

Go to the sharing and permissions section at the bottom of the window and click on the padlock in the lower right corner and enter your admin ID and password in the popup screen to unlock the padlock so that you may make changes to the user privilege.

First, make sure that you are the owner (it should have Me in parenthesis next to it) of the folder/file (with one head) and have read & write privilege, if not then change it. If you are not the Owner click on the gear next to the plus minus icons and make yourself the owner.

Next, make sure that the group (with two heads) has read & write privilege.

The next entry (with three heads) is for all users on the system and you can give it any privilege you want all users to have.

Finally, click on the gear icon and select "Apply to enclosed items..." to give the same privileges to all files and folders contained in the sub-folders. There will be a warning that this can not be undone but it can by following the preceding instructions.

You can do this to any file or folder in your home directory.

If you are comfortable using the terminal and command line pull up the man page for "chown" and "chmod", a program named Bwana will make reading the man pages readable in Safari. You can also read and edit the Access Control List privileges and Extended Attributes from the terminal. A web search will help you find more information on these items and many more, as well as using the command line and terminal.
