Q: Brand new Macbook Pro... with water damage.... help?

I purchased a Macbook Pro one month ago at BestBuy and also bought the extended warranty. Everything together cost over 2500.00!!

Yesterday water dropped onto the keyboard from an umbrella close by. There had been rain earlier, but not for awhile. I immediately heard a sizzle, turned the computer upside down, held the power button and powered off, and I have no idea what to do now?

I contacted BestBuy and they said water damage isn't covered. I called my home owners, contents insurance company and they said they'd cover anything over the $1000 deductible, but I can't afford it... it killed me to purchase this computer in the first place.

I live on disability and swallowed the cost of this computer after a nightmare with an ASUS PC laptop. I used a MAC in college that I fell in love with, so I did wothout ALOT to get this computer... now I'm back to having nothing and no way to afford a replacement.

I have a rare spine disease that prevents me from working outside my home, and I'm blogger fighting for attention to my rare disease, while also working hard to earn extra money as a writer. Now I'm shafted, with no way out if I can't get this MacBook Pro replaced!!

I could use all the help I can get to figure something out... Any thoughts? Ideas?

All comments welcome..

Thanks

    Spill Cleaning

And, don't think that just because it was two teaspoons or a couple of drops and not a glassful that there is a difference.

Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?

    Do

    • Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
    • Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
    • Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
    • Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
    • Note what was spilled on your Mac.
    • Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.

    Don't

    • Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
    • Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
    • Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
    • Do not put in a bag of rice in as much as rice will get into the ports and optical drive and do further damage.

Very sorry to hear about your health issues and the problem with your MacBook Pro. Water spills are not covered by AppleCare. Your only recourse is what your insurance company is offering.

Which extended warranty did you get?  Was it AppleCare?  If so, yes sorry but it is not an insurance policy, just an extended warranty.

However, if you bought the BestBuy's own option (the one they usually push on their customers), it comes in several flavors, some of which do include spills and accidental damage repair.  Check your receipt carefully.

You can also check your serial number here to see what Apple warranty you have (standard or AppleCare extended) - https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

If it was a BestBuy plan, I assume they should have given you a plan number, or printed it on the receipt?
