Actually, I just tried playing something without altering any settings, leaving the Dolby Digital setting to Auto. And the TV show is playing without stopping at the 9 minute mark. I'm wondering if Apple actually did correct the problem on their servers prior to our trying out the solution that was given. When the solution was first tried by Jhitpo and tnerb, it didn't work. Curiouser and curiouser...
Well, at least it's working now and I don't have the turn off the setting.

Your right I did try this "fix" about 11 hours ago and nothing changed. However I can now watch shows uninterrupted with dolby digital on auto or off. It seems to make no difference. I think apple must have fixed the problem on their end.

The problem appears to be solved. But it has nothing to do with any settings on the Apple TVs. It is entirely on Apple's end.
I have not changed any settings whatsoever on my 2 Apple TVs and I have been having this problem at my clients' homes as well on several other Apple TVs.
Changed no settings on no Apple TVs and... all of a sudden... last night...
I watched 3 different TV shows at home last night on 2 different Apple TVs and I tested watching 5 different TV shows on 4 different Apple TVs this morning. They all work perfectly now. No pauses.
Thank you Apple and, more importantly, that you all for bringing this problem to the attention of Apple.

I have exactly the same problem after 8.59 min of watching a show on apple tv through i tunes the mesage" itunes is curently not available" appears . I restart the show and again exactly 8:59 into th program the show stops .
I have had my apple tv for just over two weeks and this problem started occuring 4 days ago
I called tec support and after two hours of help they could not help and are now sending me a new apple TV
I think after reading the posts this will not fix the problem . Apple has to look into the software between apple tv and itunes .
I can watch a movie on my lab top through I-tunes and I will not get this error message . This proves the problem is between Apple Tv and i tunes

this 8:59 problem is still around. Changing the Dolby setting does not help. Problem appears only for TV Shows bought on the American iTunes store, not for movies bought on the American or Swedish iTunes store. Does anyone know anything, this thread seem to have died. I bought my 3rd gen Apple TV last week and it's been around since day 1.

Exactly the same problem here, 1 week old Apple TV. I've tried the Dolby setting, removing optical audio, rebooting router, resetting ATV to factory, lowering video to SD, fully downloading before watching and nothing solves the problem.

Well, it's been working great on my system. I'll go home tonight and check with an iTunes TV show just to be sure the problem didn't come back in the past week.
I'd suggest posting to express lane and then letting them get back to you:
It was easy to do. The response time it's super fast, but the help is informative.

Tested and it works fine on my AppleTV v2. Tried a Movie and a TV show since your post and this problem, thankfully, has not returned.

Still happening here, Apple support keep fobbing me off with standard troubleshooting guides. I've tried a different router, different ISP, different account and the problem still persists

Also if problem reoccurs, simply change setting back, this worked for me perfectly
