Well, I haven't restored myiphone since I unlocked it... So I can't answer that question for sure.  But my sense is that you would only get the message once. Btw since you recently backed up your iPhone, you don't necessarily need to back up again.  But there is no issue if you decided to do that.  It just will take a little bit longer.  Good luck!

I just did another "restore" overnight, but no message.  Either I missed it on the first go round or I'm not really unlocked.  I'll try to find a t-mobile customer that will let me try their sim card.  Unless someone knows another way to check to see if it's unlocked.

    Thanks for your help!

If you've been successful, you'll get a dialog from iTunes saying "Congratulations!  You're iPhone has been unlocked." that requires you to click OK.  It took me three attempts to get it to work.  Make sure you use the Restore to Factory Settings button that is in the center of the Info Tab for your iPhone when it is connected to iTunes.  AT&T's instructions on this procedure leave much to be desired.

Thanks.  I will give it a try again.  I have not received the dialog box stating that it is unlocked.  I did contact AT&T Tech Support - again - and they stated that based on my IMEI code my iPhone is unlocked.  I will try the restore button again tonight.

The info that ATT gives you based on your IMEI is that it has been authorized to be unlocked rather than it has been unlocked succesful.  They gave me that info prior to getting the dialog box.  Remember to restore to factory settings.  If that doesn't work, Iwould go the genius bar and see what they have to say.

Thanks for the info.  I have tried again repeatedly restoring my iPhone.  I have tried to restore to a previous backup, and as a new iPhone.  No luck getting the unlock message.  Am I missing where I am given the option of restoring to factory settings?   I don't think I am but you never know....  Looks like I may need to make a trip to the genius bar.

For restoring to factory settings, I go to the summary tab and click under restore which is right below "Check for updates in the "version" section of the page.  I don't think you could miss that but who knows... Also did you check if your itunes is up to date?  Not sure if it has an impact but perhaps that is the issue.

My iTunes is up to date.  And I have been pressing the restore button below the Check for Updates button.  The verbiage with my Restore button says "original settings" and I was begging to wonder if that was different than "factory settings".

I went to the Genius Bar in my local Apple Store today.  They confirmed that my iPhone was unlocked.  Now I am not sure what they did, but it wasn't anything to my iPhone.  They checked something on their iPad.  I told them that I did the back up and restore and didn't see the confirmation on iTunes that my phone was unlocked.  They said that all was needed to be done once AT&T unlocked it on the network, was turn the iPhone off and back on. And I wouldn't necessarily see the unlock message on iTunes.  So who knows....  After I left the geniuses, I went to a T-Mobile store and had them use one of their sim cards.  My phone connected to their network so I am unlocked.

Thanks to everyone for your assistance.

Congrats yo! Welcome to the half-price club! I'm on T-mobile with 2 iphones and paying half what ATT was charging me for the same type of plan.  Why I didn't just shell out for an unlocked iPhone to begin with, I don't know!!!

You are also limited to EDGE data speeds which are far less than half of what 3G speeds are.

I finally was able to get the message "Your phone is now unlocked"  My problem now is when I restore from backup, which I did a full back.  I only get a couple of apps.  Seems like all my apps are gone?  Any ideas.  I used to use icloud before I started thsi unlocking frenzy!!

I think it is best if you go to the genius bar for that. Otherwise you might be spending hours trying to figure that out.

In my experience, I needed to restore my iPhone from backup by right clicking my iPhone in the device list on the left side of the iTunes window.  Restore from Backup is one of the selections in the pull down menu that will appear.  This should restore all of your media and apps from the last time you backed it up.
