When you say "tried resetting it to factory," does that mean using the Restore button on the shuffle's Summary tab in iTunes?
If it plays about 3 songs and then stops playing, and it does not come back on after turning it OFF and ON with the power switch, it sounds like the battery is worn out (or otherwise faulty) and is not holding a charge (after it is disconnected from power). If you disconnect it from power and (without playing) just let it sit for a few hours, does it have any power when you try to use it later?
If your shuffle is less than one year old (since purchase date), it is under warranty. You should contact Apple tech support either by going to the Genius Bar, if there's a nearby Apple Store, or by using the Contact Us link at the bottom right corner of this web page.

I have had it for about a year and a half and use it regularly when running. I guess it is just at the end of it's functional life. I actually have 2 and they both did the same thing around the same time. Just ordered a new one, for the use I have gotten from it, it has been a good value. Thanks!

Unless you are using it for hours every day, it seems like the battery should last longer...
When running, if you clip it on your clothing in a place like your waistband where sweat may accumulate during exercise, it's possible that this moisture is getting inside the shuffle over time and reducing its lifetime. A location that gets more dry airflow, such as shirt sleeve or armband would be better...
For the one you have now, if moisture is affecting it, maybe if you leave it alone for a few weeks in a dry well-ventilated location, it will start working better again...

Well, much to my dismay, the brand new shuffle arrived and did the exact same thing!
Iif I tried to fwd through a song, would completely shut down. I am pretty certain I have tracked the issue back to the actual downloaded song. Seems as if some of my song purchases came up with an error message that my computer was not given privileges to play the song. I also had added a "video" song to the list and it seemed to hang up on that song as well. I pulled those songs off my playlist and now it is back to normal. Still keeping the new shuffle, the more, the merrier!

I'm having the exact same issue and it is the moitsture. I clip it to my collar or sleeve when I workout if ANY sweat gets on the controls, it dies. when that happens, I leave it sit for a couple days then it works again for a while but eventually will do the same again. I'm on my thrid one this year and have given up.
I've gone back to using my 8-year-old 2nd gen shuffle which works better even though I need to charge it daily (the reason I chose to replace it). The shuffle is awesome for working out / running but and not good for much else. If it can't hold up to sweat, it's absolutely useless. My 4th gen is still under warranty but I'm not even pursuing it because I'm on my third one with this problem and until Apple addresses this, there's no point.
