My iMac won't upload.  Running SpeedTest gives a decent Ping for this area and the expected download speed but generates an upload error -- meaning that I can't use the Internet.  What do I do?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Are you posting from a different computer then?

    Which exact speedtest is it?

    Hi  Thanks for responding.

Yes, I am posting from a different computer.  I have no trouble with this one (a MacBook) nor from my Windows machine.

The URL I've been using is www.speedtest.net.

When it jumps to the upload, does it say loading for an instant?

I assume you tried different servers?

What do you get for raw speeds here, for both Java & Flash, DSL Reports...

    Hi BDAqua,

No it doesn't jump at all.  It flashes "Connecting" until it times out.  Then is shows and "Upload Test Error -- Upload test returned an error while trying to read the upload file."

This problem started today.  Everything was fine yesterday.

I have tried different URLs/servers.  Apparently, I can open or refresh a page that's already been cached, but no new one.  The best download speed I can get is 3.0 MBPS; the best upload is 0.50.  I have a DSL connection in a rural area (no cable or line of sight for wireless) and I'm at the end of the line, so that's it.  I am showing 3.0 Mbps for a download speed and a Ping of around 112, which, I'm afraid, is about as good as it gets here.

Running your DSLReports, here's what I get:

    Flash Test (Denver)

    Latency to server: 60 ms

    Download: 1.8 Mb/s

Upload: Preparing to Upload 0000 Kb (acts hung-up)

    Java Test (LA)

Waiting for recipt ... (gave up after 2 minutes, though all 50.0 kilobytes were sent).

Just a guess...Apple has recently disabled Java as a default setting. Perhaps the upload test relies on java to post results?

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for chiming in. How do I reenable Java as a default.

Both Java and JavaScript have been enabled the entire time.

    Update:

After getting rid of some cookies and trying to reset a number of conditions (and just generally playing around) I'm now in a situation where some sites will load and work fine but others won't connect at all.  I can connect to Hilton but not Marriott; to Hertz but not United; to the WSJ and NYTimes but not the Denver Post.  I now can't even connect to speedtest.net as before.  What is going on?

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

    Click OK.

    Also, turn off IPv6:

    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6

    Or whatever Interface you use.

    Hi BDAqua

I'm not sure what I just did but I followed your instructions and everything seems to be working fine now.  Thank you very much for your help -- and for seeing this through.

    Great news, thanks!

What it does is set a bunch of new prefs to use in the New Location, it doesn't get rid of the problem ones, it just doesn't use them.
