    Worked for me.

I wasn't actually Moving a message, but I was Dock Icon bouncing and Sound playing. These two actions seemed to work only when the Background Color setting was happening on a separate action.

    So I have (ordered):

    (1) Set color

    (2) Sound, Bounce

    Solved. Thanks.

    2. Also as stated earlier in this thread you want to make sure that you don't have a rule early in your list of rules that says to stop evaluating rules (by default Apple mail may have this on your first rule).

I'm going for this one and I'll be back to tell you how it worked.

by default Apple Mail includes a rule: News From Apple

The last action was: "stop evaluating rules"

Also this was the first rule on the list.

So I'm guessing this issues might be from this, let's see how Mail behaves from now on

Not sure whether or not I was experiencing the same issue, but I noticed that for me rules weren't being applied where I had more than one message in a thread - even when I triggered the Apply Rules function on the mailbox. This was even when I had one simple rule - colour background for a message address to a particular email....

I changed the view so that either the messages weren't organised by conversation, or all conversation are expanded. Then reapplied rules, all seems ok... for now at least.. Looks like a bug with collapsed conversations to me.

OK, I've had this problem for a while and I finally found the correct fix for it, after trying a number of the suggestions here without any success.  I'm still running Lion, but the problem has been there for me pretty much since I upgraded from Snow Leopard.  This is something that the upgrade installer script should be doing and Apple is remiss in not modifying their script to do this and just assuming that everything will work out correctly.

This looks a bit scary, but it's not really.  You have to pretty much force Mail to completely rebuild your mailboxes.  You will not lose any mail by doing this, but you will generate fresh indexes, which will not only fix the Rules problem, but also fix a number of search problems.  Here are the steps:

    Quit Mail

Launch the Terminal app (in Applications/Utilities):

Type the following lines into Terminal one at a time:

         cd ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/

         rm Envelope*

Relaunch Mail and re-import all of your messages (my 58,000+ messages took about 15 minutes)

    Good luck!

Ok, I guess I was a bit too hasty there.  The rules worked for a while, but now they've stopped.  I'm not about to go through that fire drill every time they stop working.

I am firmly convinced now, that this is a major bug in Mac Mail.  It's absurd that they do not address this at all.  Why even bother to have "rules" if they don't work?  I guess the only real solution is the 3rd party extension that someone else posted here.  I guess we are heading to the world of Microsoft since Apple seems unconcerned about this issue.

Gonzo - I was able to completely solve this problem (on my three Mac OSX systems anyway).  See my posts on July 31, 2012 - earlier in this thread.  Hopefully that may help you too.

Rules aren't working for me either. Doesn't seem Apple is paying much attention though

GrantMac - I 've tried your solution and the others here and they just don't work for me.  I use SpamSieve and under its rule in Mail it moves messages to a folder and marks them as read.  Simple.  It works about 50% of the time.  What is interesting is I added more items to the rule - play a sound and also run an AppleScript that marks the message as read - and those rules often don't trigger either.  Something is causing Mail to stop evaluating rules prematurely even when the Stop Evaluating Rules action is not in the rule.  I wish I could figure it out...

Way to Go. I spent all day on trying to figure out why my rules worked yesterday and not today.  You were right In the first rule Apple News the last line of code reads"stop evaluating rules".  This means no other rule will be evaluated.  What I want to know is how it got there.  I'm sure Apple did not program that given the amount of people who are having problems with this.  Thank you very much for making that observation.  This solved my problem.  Thank you very much tbb31

Apple Mail's junk filter does not work at all in Mountain Lion

It doesn't remember a single address. All junk mail appears in the mailbox, no matter how often I report them as junk.

It worked well in Snow Leopard.

I wonder when we'll get an upgrade.

PS: I clicked reset, and after that it was even worse than before. The junk filter has total amnesia.

Hi Ocean 17: I found that when the rules were updated for Apple on Lion (Apple being the first rule on most machines) in the last required field where it asks "perform the following action" please make sure this does NOT say STOP EVALUATING RULES.  This is the reason why my rules suddenly stopped.  APPLE being the first rule it will sort through all of this rule's behaviors and if it runs into STOP EVALUATING RULES before it hits another rule NONE of your rules will work.  I don't know how that got there but mine works since I got rid of it.

Under junk mail please check junk mail filtering—Move it to junk mailbox—Sender of message in in my Address Book—Sender of message is in my previous recipients—message is addressed using my full name—Trust junk mail headers.

You can also try to opt out of spam on your email providers site.  This does not work real well as they want you to receive advertising to support their site.  This worked for me.  I also got rid of Apple's packaged rules and made a list of my own and gave it a number lower down on the list.  I hope that helps!

What an asinine answer... If it JUST WORKED people wouldn't be writing about the same issue for years...This isn't something new and Apple couldn't care less about fixing it. This thread goes from 2011 to today.

Here I am AGAIN today taking time out of my business day to hunt for a fix for another Apple problem.

There's an elephant in the room.

2011? The issue of "mail rules in the mail app ONLY applying to the inbox" has been a problem since at least 2007. Any server-side mail rules that move mail to a subfolder (even in icloud!) and you're out of luck. 6 years and no fix is a little ridiculous.

My rules dont work but if I edit one rule in any way, even by changing the spelling by one letter, and select ok I get another pop up saying" apply rules or cancel". By clicking apply the rules ARE applied to anything they do apply to but only ONCE untill I edit again
