I had the same problem, which may arise from having multiple "stacked" updates available—Mountain Lion 10.8.1, iMovie, and iPhoto.
This resolved it for me:
1. Under Software Update, click "Show updates."
2. In the update window, click "More ...", which shows all updates available (in my case 3), and lets you install them seprately;
3. Install the 10.8.1 one first, letting the computer restart;
4. Repeat the process to install the remaining ones.
After you install 10.8.1, you may be able to install the remaining ones together, but I did them separately. Each of them is a long download.

I had same error. the updates includes: software updates (imovie and Java) and unarchiver. 10.8.1 already installed. I have tried to update one by one in different order but none of them worked.

This has been happening to me for some time, however, after getting the error message I go back to Software Update... and it tells me there are no update available. So apparently the update installed and the error message 103 is itself an error?
So now what? Do I have missing parts of past uipdates?

I'm having the same trouble as Toolman1848 and Mattv25.
It kept alerting me to error.(103) I quit the App Store, thinking it might refresh it, went back and the update was gone.
Are we missing something? Were we hacked?
Someone at Apple please explain.

I had exactly the same problem, but I also have a Mountain Lion server on my LAN. I had the caching service enabled and several updates failed with error 103 until I cleared the cache on the server. It is possible that the cached updates were corrupt or incomplete.
