Q: iMessage on Mountain Lion does not send/recieve file transfers?

As the title says, iMessage on my MacBook Pro Retina with Mountain Lion will not accept file transfers nor will it send files. I currently have the same iMessage accounts set up on my iPhone and Mac so what's been happening is I'm talking to someone on the computer's iMessage and the whole conversation syncs back and forth with my iPhone, however when someone sends me a file, only the phone recieves it and NOT the computer.

What I've done to fix this so far:

-reinstall mountain lion, didn't fix it

-reinstall iOS on my iPhone, didnt fix it

-add and remove all iMessage accounts on both devices, didn't fix it

What do you guys recommend I do?

I found that killing IMTransferAgent while I had active 'failing' transfers i.e. Messages running, caused Messages to successfully download the pictures. I agree that it seems to be when you receive pictures while your computer is asleep or not in use and the phone receives them.

This worked for me, sweet! And I concur that it appears to get gunked up when I receive a pic while my iMac is asleep. Then everything after just queues up. Once I killed that process, they all came flooding in, albeit out of order.

    HI,

Anybody that might know is probably subject to a Non Disclosure agreement.

They would also have to be interested in Messages enough to check it out and have had the same issue.

Depending on how many people Apple might have testing various updates in the making, we are talking about a diminishing number of potential testers.

    Whoa!

This problem had been driving me insane. I went to Activity Monitor and Force Quit the IMTransferAgent. Within about a second, my Messages for Mac app went nuts. I received 30 (old) messages with images that people had sent me over the past ~2 weeks, which I hadn't received on my computer.

Guess it's good that I now know how to fix the issue... I wish it actually WORKED though.

Force Quitting IMTransferAgent doesn't produce results for me, sadly.

Hit CMD + Space on your keyboard. Type Activity Monitor then hit Enter. Now in the search box at the top right of the Activity Monitor window, type in IMTransferAgent and hit Enter. When it shows up on the list, highlight it and click on Quit Process.

    Hi,

It is in the Utilities Folder which in turn is in the Applications Folder

    Commonly written as Applications/Utilities

I have actually dragged mine to the DOCK next to Applications and access mine that way

You could use this method to Open Applications and Scroll down the Utilities.

Activity Monitor can filter the running apps and processes in many ways.

I tend to use "All Processes " at the top.

The Processes (numbered in the PID column) tend to be "owned" by the user or the System in some form.

Thanks for that assist but this still doesn't solve the issue. It did for a second. It sent a bunch of pictures from the last few days. But then stopped again. So **** frustrating! Is there not other "true" resolve?

Nope, not so far. Maybe once iOS 6 is released, they'll release an update. Who knows.

I've had to do the IMTransferAgent quitting thing twice within two weeks. It works after I do it, but i just have to keep an eye on when I stop receiving photos on Messages for Mac.

    Hi,

At present we have not worked out why (other than Messages being Off Line or Sleeping) that causes the issue.

Some people have found that this "Fix" works permanently for them.

    HI,

PRAM or Parameter RAM is stuff that the computer manages to hold on to during Shut  Down and Restarts.

In OS 9 (many moons ago ) doing a PRAM reset lost your Date and Time Settings  and sometimes your Time Zone as well as various other System Preferences Settings.

The Date And Time can be set to be gained from a Server so that fresh settings do not have to be made.

It can hold things like the device numbers for the amount of USB items that are Attached (Externally as well as Internally) and cause them to be reset.

This often "gets back" the Internal Camera if it has been "lost" by the system.

    More info http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/Reset-Pram.htm

Hmm I got to send an image today, yay! I hope this problem went away with 10.8.2. How are you folks doing in this regard?
