Add me to the list of those wanting the separate search back. I have left feedback via the link posted earlier in the thread.

I too also have issues with local DNS searches and Safari deciding it knows best because what I entered was not a FQDN. Whats worse is that the DNS or servernames are searched for on google and thus stored on googles servers since they store the data relating to searches.

Anneliese, I don't believe Apple reads the community posts.  Send your well-written feedback about the search windows to them directly at

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

as suggested by Dennis S earlier in this thread.  I completely agree with you, you expressed it really well, and I don't think they'll see it here.

    and add me too.

I have done as RainyWeather suggests and left clear feedback at

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

I hope many others will do the same.

    Forget it.

They won`t change it. They know what`s good for you - better than you do. Haven`t you learned by now !!!!?.

Ì can`t beleive I updated Safari without checking to see what this stupis upgrade was all about. A huge headache.

Where is search history ? What the **** were they thinnking ? Not of you and I.

If you have Snow Leopard or Tiger you can replace the google serach on the toolbar

simply go into Safari  click on  Preferences, once n

click on the General tab llnk (icon looks like a light switch) look  for the default engine: and click on tje drop down menu you'll have 3 choices  google, yahoo or RSS

I think those are the only optons.

Or you can go to HOmepage and make goole search engine your new hompage when you open Safari

which ever works best for YOUl

PS Apple is asking for people to help with adding newer or more otptions in Safari you may want to inquire or

    offer your services.

The problem with the searchbar combined in Safari is that Apple can never know if I would like to search of not. Only guess. Typing an IP address with a slash brings me to google .. not to my server. If I add a name to my hosts file (say peanuts) it will search for that name, not consider it a host.

Mountain Lion takes away stuff and Apple dares to ask money for it.

After 20+ years of using Apple on a daily base I'm confident this is the last year for me and many people arround me.

And no, I don't want my stuff in the cloud, I don't want my tabs to open on my iPad that my son is playing with, I don't want to share everything with facebook or twitter, I don't want autosave filling my disk with useless documents, I don't want photoshop to open my last 20 documents if I just need to scale an image, I don't want my window in the finder to scroll horizontally if there is nothing to scroll (rubber banding) ..

Apple seems to be to proud to undo 'inventions' that didn't work. They should.

You are right on. What follows is my kind words to Apple Feedback:

Why did you change the google search bar at the top of the screen. What is wrong with you people. don't you have research groups that try this stuff out before your masterminds just change such a well liked feature. Not only is the google search gone (don't tell me to just put it in the url space) I have to toggle the double arrow in the top right to bring up the dock. I'm getting a little sick of your company getting big heads of thinking your the top dog. With blunders like this, that top dog status could leave as fast as it came. Get on board and listen to your base, the peons that actually use this stuff.GRRRRRRRRRR!!

I agree with all of you, this *****! I sent a feedback to Apple. I added for myself a Google search window of my own...not as good as the previous window search window but better than yahoo! It stays on your finder.

Dear Ellen, thank you for this, I have been thinking it was something I had done wrong on upgrading to mountain lion... I am not the most IT literate. I have now downloaded the google search button as I used it all the time, thank god its still on my ipad......

When you control click a word, hold down command when selecting "search with google" and you get the result in a new tab keeping the original intact.

Similarly, if you type your search in the address bar, hold command while hitting return and you get the search result in a new tab, leaving original active. If you want the new tab to be active, add shift with command. I hope that helped.

Thank you for this, but I use google as my search engine and that is my home page when I click on safari, I don't use clicks, or the command button, i just type and search. I don't know the apple short cuts I am afraid, I see peolple using them but I have no idea how to or even where you find out about what does what. Thank you for trying to explain!!

The New and Improved url line is a large pain in the rear.  Getting to a site is a NUISANCE!

Why do the Apple Wizards insist on fixing something that is NOT broken

If I had a touchscreen I might like the oversized tabs and url/search in one bar at the top but I DON"T have a touchscreen and now that I think about it, my Safari on my iPhone has a seperate search box and I like it. Makes me mad as **** at Apple for their reduculus changes!

I found Cosytabs to get back my normal size tabs back and there is a simple way to get rss support back so.... Why is there nothing to get the seperate search box back?  ˚-˚
