Did you try to reset the sync history in iSync/Settings on your Mac?

Thanks for the suggestion, but it did not help.
I edited a contact and added another contact on my MacBook again, did an iTunes sync via cable, and the contacts once again failed to show on my iPod.

Did you try to replace the contacts on your iPod with the ones from your Mac during the following sync?
you can find this option in the info pane, Advanced section.
After that try again to sync a new contact.

Thanks, but that did not work either. I also entered a test contact into the Mac, did a sync, and it too failed to appear on my iPod.
Then in iTunes/Info, I deselected "Sync Contacts" and hit Apply to remove all the contacts from my iPod.
Then in iTunes/Info/Advanced/"Replace Information on this iPod", I selected Contacts and synced again. Once again, it restored most contacts to my iPod, but not those I'd added recently on my Mac including the test contact.
Very frustrated now.

The following Apple article did fix my Mac Address Book not syncing to my iPod Contacts:
The article also suggests first resetting SyncServices, but that did NOT work for me.
But then doing the next 28 steps suggested in the article (after resetting sync services) did solve my problem of changes in my Mac Address Book failing to sync to my iPod. Because I had some 30 Address Book Groups and thousands of contacts, this was a tedious process, but it did work.
For some reason, this article failed to display when I searched for Apple.com for Address Book sync issues. But thankfully I found the link in someone's discussion on MacRumors.com. So I thought I'd post it here in case it might help others also.
