I found a solution in another discussion... I just didn't get it the first time I read it. I used the contextual menu and selected 'Download linked file as' and that got it right back up there. It disappears when you clear the list though.

Can you be more specific on how you found the download button and placed it back on safari? It happened to me and I have looked everywhere and haven't found it.

Well, all I did was to download a file using the Safari download manager. To sum it up:
- Find any file on the Internet, say an .mp3 track.
- Right-click and select 'Download Linked File as'
- The icon should now appear in Safari's toolbar.

Thanks Morten. It worked. I guess bottom line is the icon appears whenever you download something from the internet and it stays visible until you clear your download. I've set my Safari Preferences - General to - Remove download list items Manually.
