Q: Audio meters works, but I can't hear no sound.

Hi,

I've just installed Final Cut Pro X (10.0.5) on OSX Lion.

I'm importing a bunch of videos I captured with my Canon 5D Mark II at 1920x1080 29.97 fps.

I am also importing an mp3 files.

When I skim over the thumbnals or the main song and video in the timeline, I can see the audio meters working and blinking, but I can't hear no audio.

If I import the same videos with iMovie I can hear the audio while I skim. Same with the rest of the computer audio.

Seems like Final Cut Pro is not outputting the audio in my headphones. Does anyone know if there's anything I have to switch?

Thanks,
G

Are your headphones connected to the headphone jack or something else?

My headphones are connected to the front of my PowerMac. I've tried plugging the headphones to the back, but still I can't hear any sound coming from Final Cut Pro X.

If I play a song from iTunes instead I can hear the sound without problem.

The problem seems similar to what described here:

But in the new Final Cut Pro X 10 I can't find the same settings...

Unfortunately that's not relevant to this application.

Well, every application I have on my mac outputs audio (including Premiere, AfterEffect, etc..). The only one that doesn't is Final Cut Pro, sounds like is some setting inside the software or the way the software deal with the internal sound card (the only one I have installed)

    What internal sound card?

You only mention "skimming"; what about actually *playing* the videos?

It could be that you have audio skimming turned off: you can turn skimming on and off for video and audio (press the "S" key), or just for audio (press Shift-S).

I've tried turning skimming on and off for both video and audio, but still no sounds.

The soundcard on my mac is the Built In Intel High Definition Audio (as it says in my hardware details).

My hardware is MacPro 2.8Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 16Gb Ram.

I've captured a video where you can see Final Cut Pro not playing audio, but showing activity on the meters while iTunes and Chrome/Soundcloud play sounds correctly.

well that was useful - shows that you don't have any channels muted, but the other possibility is if you have (accidentally) "Disabled" a clip.  This happens when you select one or more tracks in the timeline and choose Clip > Disable (press V).  Disabled clips appear dimmed in the timeline and are silent.  To reenable disabled clip(s) select them and choose: Clip > Disable (or press V).

Not sure if this is you issue, but the other possibility, if you use an I/O such as a Apogee Ensemble, or Presonus Firebox, Blackmagic or AJA device, etc., check in your FCPX Preferences: Final Cut Pro > Preferences > Playback > AV output...

Make sure you do not have a disconnected I/O selected.

Hope you get it worked out gvocale

Try going to project properties Cmd-J and changing the audio channels to stereo.

So I've tried both the Clip > Disable and Cmd-J for the audio channels, but it's still not working.

I see thought that when I go to Final Cut Pro > Preferences > Playback > AV output there is no option available but only "None Found". Could that be the issue?

That's not the issue, mine is the same because we don't have an audio I/O connected.  You're doing everything right from what I see in your YouTube clip - it's weird what's going on.  I don't know the answer.

Has anyone solved this? I have the exact same problem as gvocale.

CComplete details about your system. I assume you're not using 10.0.5. How are you monitoring the audio? Do it hear it when you play? Is audio skimming turned on?

I have a mid-2013 iMac with 16gb of RAM (FCP open up in milliseconds, no crashing issues).

    I am running FCP 10.2

    • Skimmers all enabled
    • Audio meters show existing audio
    • There is no audio anywhere, timeline, inspector, etc
    • Sound effects window, when I click on a sound effect it shows as playing but I don't hear anything either.
    • Sound effect icons show as Quicktime files. Should they?
    • In iMovie audio is OK, also sound effects.
    • I have tried setting Pan to Stereo in inspector.
    • No audio anywhere
    • When I had FCP 7 I had a similar problem but I solved it through the View > Audio Playback settings.  This menu item is no longer available in FCP 10
    • I have no external audio rigs.  Just the system's in-built speakers.

    Thanks for the reply, Tom.

I really need to sort this out.
