Q: facetime icon deleted on iphone

My kid accidentally deleted the FaceTime icon on the Home Screen of my wife's iPhone 4S. While the application is still installed on the device and we can use it from Contacts, it was a bit more convenient accessing it directly from the FaceTime App itself. How do we get it back, without having to restore the phone to factory settings?

Let's see the entire screen shot with the carrier information across the top and the icons along the bottom. Better yet, take a picture of the phone.

I think the confusion may arrise if you set up the phone from an iPod back up. I suspect, in that case, the icon may momentarily appear on the screen. However, it has never been possible to use FaceTime from an icon on the iPhone. Not having an icon is the way it's supposed to be.

Do you think perhaps, that if you did have the FT app on the iphone, that maybe when an update to itunes or ios occurred, that it removed it at that time, do you think that could have happened?

No. I know there never was a functional FaceTime icon on the iPhone.

Well, all I know is that the icon was on my iPhone for a long time.  It did disappeared after I tried to use it to call my son.
Now I know I have to go to contacts to be able to use it.  Thank you for the info.

My guess: the Facetime icon doesn't exist on Iphone since IOS5.

For recent Iphone (4GS), there was no icon, and those who has IOS4 (Iphone4), the icon was there, and after the upgrade to IOS5, the icon was removed because it is useless, using Contact is enough.

Though this is old, I can vouch that there WAS an icon on his iphone for FaceTime.  I had one too and deleted it on purpose. Since then I've decided I want it back, which is how I found this thread.

Resetting my home screen to factory defaults did not work.

The only way that's possible (and it's not a proven fact) is if you loaded an iPod Touch or iPad backup onto your iPhone at one point. That may have put the FT icon on the screen.  Your statement that you deleted the icon gives further evidence that it was not real (or at least not functional) because Apple's native app icons cannot be deleted.

Your iPhone is working as it should all along, with FT only as part of Contacts.

I have an iPhone 4S that I bought the day they were made available from AT&T.  It came with a version of iOS 4, don't remember exactly which version it was because I am currently up to iOS 6.1.2 and didn't track what it originally came with.  I bought my wife a 4S at the same time.  When we got the phones, they both had the facetime icon on the home screen.  We played with it a couple times and didn't think much about it.

One of the early iOS 5.X updates deleted the icon because Apple felt it was easier to just make a Facetime call directly from the contact page for the person you wanted to Facetime with.  This is just my personal opinion but I agree with them.  It saved a few taps.

Yes there was a Facetime icon.  Yes it was deleted by an iOS update.

Mysterious icons aside, your iPhone 4S came with iOS 5 (not 4.x).  The 4S came out on Oct 14, 2011 at the same time of the iOS 5 release, and no 4S was ever shipped with iOS 4.

Your "personal opinion is that there was actually a facetime icon on the phone, or that Apple was right to delete it?

Either way, your "personal opinion" is wrong.

Apple did not delete it because it never existed.

OK  my contract with AT&T was for 2 years and expires on May 7th 2013.  I have had my phone since early May of 2011.  I will cop to it possibly having iOS 5 installed.  I do however remember having a Facetime icon on my home screen when I got my phone.
