I have pre-ordered an iPhone 5, but I' have realised that it wont work with my car head unit - which cost nearly £2000 and was bought specifically to control, and display song information from my iPhone.

It has been absolutely brilliant.  Being able to control tracks from my steering wheel, seeing the artwork on the screen and the track name and artist.  It made people go "wow".

Unfortunately, the Ipod Out feature that allows control of the iphone from the steering wheel appears not to be supported due to the new lightning connector, nor does the 30pin adapter correct this.

I am now faced with the odd possiblity of having to sell my iPhone 5 when I get it, and go back to a 4S, as it literally is the most important way, as a huge fan of music whilst driving, in which I use my iPhone day to day.

I really really hope that Apple have a way to add "Ipod Out" support to the iPhone 5, so that it can again be controlled via a car's steering wheel.

Cutting out a feature that helps prevent distractions, accidents, even deaths is wrong.

I will happily pay whatever Apple wants for the adapter in future, but I need to know its possible, otherwise I will have to go back to a 4S, as I cant be rooting in my glovebox to change iphone tracks.

Does anyone know if Apple will be creating a future adapter that supports iPod Out, to bring safety back to the millions of cars that currently can control iphones and ipods through the steering wheel?

It is an offence in the United Kingdom to interact with a mobile device in a car, even if its texting, or changing ipod tracks.  For UK iPhone owners - Ipod Out is a legal requirement to use the ipod in the car.  Please Apple, dont go backwards on car safety, I plead with you!

Thankls

What about the Lightning to USB connector?  Will that support iPod out?  I'm also concerned that the audio system on a car (that I just ordered one week ago!) won't work with the iPhone 5!

The only other solution is to buy a current version of an iPod -- not a new one, and load it up with your music. That's what I plan to do. Then I'll use the Iphone through my car's blue tooth. It's a frustrating compromise but it works. I still want the new iPhone 5 features.

I searched all over to try and find an answer to this...

this is what I found in macworld.

"As with the 30-pin connector, the Lightning connector supports video output; Apple told Macworld that Lightning-to-HDMI and Lightning-to-VGA cables will be available “in the coming months.”"

    found from: http://www.macworld.com/article/1168555/what_apples_new_lightning_connector_mean s_for_you.html

    also from: http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/iphone-5-lightning-connector-does-support-vid eo-output-hdmi-and-vga-cables-incoming

From that I can only assume that the CONNECTOR does support iPod out, just not the adapter.

I currently have a Pioneer AVIC-Z130bt and have the same issue at hand.

So the real question is, how soon will pioneer be able to research and engineer a cable that goes from the lightning port to our radios?

Also, I wonder, if I were to take the lightning cable that came with the iphone, plug it into the usb port that the iphone cable plugs into, then take a male-male headphone cable and plug it into the other female cable attached, would THAT work? Just wondering... I doubt it, but what if...

    Also found here: http://avic411.com/index.php?/blog/1/entry-50-iphone-5-what-we-know-so-far/

"From what we currently understand, the iPhone 5, with the 30 pin adapter and the current cable from pioneer:

    Will support audio iPod output.

Will support audio out apps (like Pandora)

Might support controls (thumb up, thumb down, next, etc)

Will NOT support video iPod, video app, or Enhanced App Radio functions."

What apple should've done is shove their secrecy bulls*it up their a$$es and they should've sent out the specs of the lightning port to all the different manufacturers months ago so they can come up with adapters and cables for their own uses. In a world where everything is so connected my mobile devices apple really made an immature move by keeping this a secret and in turn f*cked over ALOT of people for the next few months. All I can say is, if a fix doesn't come soon that s3 is gonna look more and more tempting. Plus my radio supports android as well now.

I have 2 Kenwood stereos in use that I regularly useto control my current iPhone's music. The Kenwood in my boat has a hard wired 30 pin connector and is located in the glove box with the control unit by the driver. This change will royaly screw up how I listen to my music. I bought an iphone so I didn't have to carry around an iPod and a cell phone so now Apple is forcing many of us to go back to that.

I tried cancelling my preorder with no success so, I may be selling my iPhone 5 to go back to the 4. Kenwood would not commit to answering my question about a future adapter as they haven't had a unit to test it on.

    *** apple?

You should have 30 days before you can't return it and get your upgrade back. I used to work at a cell phone kiosk. Give it 2 weeks, then see what kenwood says.

I am in the same boat with a new Kenwood stereo in my car.  I am really hoping for an adapter as the new kenwood models are made to work with the iphone!

A new cable for my car stereo that supports iPod out would fix that problem but for my Kenwood Marine radio, the 30 pin connector is hard wired into the radio so if an adapter doesn't work then that radio has lost all of it's functionality. I may try to buy a used iPod just for my boat as it would be cheaper than buying a new marine radio.

Really ***** that Apple didn't have some type of plan for backwards compatibility. I could see not supporting equipment that was at the end of it's life cycle but it was just last year that they release the 4S with the 30 pin functionality.

I really hope they're planning on fixing this as I do plan to keep my new iPhone 5 (over my 4).

I have a Sony XAV-60 car stereo, it has iPod conectivity and uses a standard USB port.

Just got a iPhone 5 this morning and can confirm that using the included USB to lightning cable, eveyything works as before. Music plays, song info and album art displays fine. Can also use the steering wheel controls to change tracks. So much for "iPod out not supported"

This is what Kenwood just emailed me when I asked if they had come up with a solution or firmware upgrade for my head unit in my car:

I would like to inform you as most Apple customers are not aware that the iPhone 5 this phone itself does not support analog audio and video signals through USB and because of this the only feature it will output is audio. You can either use Bluetooth Audio to stream your music or use the actual lighting plug to USB.

Apple decided to change the design of this phone completely and because of this it will no longer output video as the iPhone 4S and older phones.

Currently Apple released an HDMI and VGA cable to allow the iPhone 5 to output video to a TV but hasn’t released a 30pin adaptor such as the older phones took to support video out. Until Apple releases a similar adaptor then at that point it can be tested out to see if video is fully supported.

I would recommend checking with Apple to see if any future adaptors to support video will be released. For now the only option is to steam your music via Bluetooth Audio.

Well then kenwood is seriously behind the times my friend, pioneer is already releasing iphone5 adapters for their 2010-2013 lineup. So yes, video output is supported.

    You can find them here.

To be honest I'd like to think it was my idea lol since I sent them a message saying they should do an hdmi/vga adapter instead of worrying about lighting adapters since apple already makes the lightning to VGA/hdmi. They published this about 2 weeks after I sent that message lol. I'm sure that's not the case and someone came up with it weeks before but I can dream can't I?
