Ended up removing ITunes; Quicktime; Apple Software Update; Apple Mobile Device; Bonjour; and Apple Application Support in that order, restarted computer..

Verified that all were removed(Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs) then downloaded ITunes and installed and voila it works.

This happened to me this morning. Running Win7 64-bit OS. Interestingly, once I unplugged the USB cable from the extension cable it was plugged into (and yes, the extender WAS plugged in as usual), then plugged the iPhone cable directly into a different USB port on my computer it recognized the phone and all was OK. Weird, but perhaps this will work for others.
