Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

    Alright everyone! Good news!

I took my MacBook Pro in again a day or two after my initial visit to the genius bar. I had two kernel panics after the OS X clean install. This happened on Thursday. (Sorry for not writing sooner, I'm being a bad forum member. . . and I've been busy working off an old MacBook) As of last Thursday in the Apple Store at the Americana on Brand in Glendale, this has become a major concern for Apple. I had the same genius that I had had earlier in the week, and I brought her the TS4088 code for her to read up on. She checked it out and had some trouble digging through the Apple repair records to find the reports but stumbled upon them eventually. After this she found that the very same day Apple had uploaded a GPU hardware test to the stores servers for this specific problem and as of that day had updated the Genius repair page for this issue. Here's what occured:

    1. Boot MacBook Pro from Apple Store server

    2. Run new GPU hardware test

    3. FAILED INSTANTLY

    4. Strangely enough, after the test had been run, the Genius rebooted my MacBook Pro to run the test again, but couldn't find the test on the server any longer. O_o

There's no current plan of attack for this issue on Apples part, so the Genius had to take some time asking the store manager as to what to do next. The main things to convey are:

    1. Heat issues. This very well could be the nVidia GPU's overheating with Mountain Lion and causing logic board issues.

    2. Blank screens and flickering screens, of which I had both. (Cool thing: I could remote in form another Mac with Apple Remote Desktop when my MacBookPro screen would go balnk and it would refresh my MacBook Pro's screen and turn it back on. Weird.)

    3. Kernel panics. Kernel panics are not listed as a side effect of this GPU issue, but we've all experienced them so we need to convey that they are happening!

The Apple Store is currently replacing my logic board for free. I'm not sure if this will be the norm, since as I said, I don't think Apple knows whether this is a full scale issue that will lead to a recall or just a heat issue with select 15" MacBook Pros and nVidia GPU's.

Best of luck to all! I hope my story helps!

I gather you mean the Flash-based YouTube. How about the HTML5 version? You still have KPs?

It really activates when I use iTunes to listen to music with full screen kelidoscope graphics runnng... 30 seconds into the song-- KP. Now i have the last two reports right here. I'm afraid that after taking my machine Im going to get charged and the problem will persist :( Dont know what to do.  Interval Since Last Panic Report:  107869 sec Panics Since Last Report: Actually, have you tried booting in Safe Mode, connect your Mac to the Internet via Ethernet, and check if the KPs still happen when on YouTube or listening to your music on iTunes? I notice that you seem to have a problem with several USB items that may not be actually physically connected to a USB port, but to the internal USB hub. Could mean your logic board is faulty, could also mean it's just your USB controller that's gone AWOL. Sometimes, deleting the plist files that go with those components can solve the problem. Worth a try before turning your machine in to the nearest Apple Store or retailer.

Also, do you boot in 64-bit mode by default?

Dude.. Ive been at this for a month... Safe Boot... CTRL R... clean install of Lion... I even tried to re-install SNow Leopard from the CDs... no avail. I really appreciate your replies, but honestly--- if it is the logic board... how much would that come out to to get serviced? ((horror)).. would I be better off getting another comp? I dont wanna throw money at the problem if the en result is the same. Thanks again.

Forget my 64-bit question, I hadn't seen your Mac ran Lion. This version of OS X only runs in 64-bit mode anyway. Getting someone at an Apple Store or retailer to check on your machine is probably a good idea, since your problem seems to be hardware-related. I suppose you have also tried AppleJack? (The software, not the beverage...)

AppleJack is a small, free utility you can find here. It only runs in Single User mode, ie by booting while keeping the Command and S keys down until you reach a black screen with white lettering on it.

There, at the prompt ($ sign), you type "applejack AUTO restart" (I gather your keyboard is a QWERTY, otherwise, you must type "qpplejqck QUTO restqrt" if you're on an AZERTY keyboard) without the quotes, and let the application do its job. Can take a while, depending on how much work needs to be done (cleaning caches, emptying virtual memory, repairing permissions, etc...).

AppleJack has saved my bacon more than once. Worth a try before you sell the house to buy your Mac a new logic board!
