Q: Macbook Pro screen becomes blue every time a discrete graphics card is used!

The screen color of my 2011 17" Macbook Pro changes to blue-ish every time the discrete graphics card is used! That started to happen only after I upgraded to OS Mountain Lion!

Whenever I open any app that use Discrete graphics card by default, the screen becomes blue and looks terrible.. Applications include, VLC, Chrome (20.0) and I guess quite a few others!

So now efectively my Macbook Pro has just one usable video-card - the buit in one, because the discrete card (AMD Radeon HD 6750M) is not usable!

Here's some other forums set up about this problem, so it's not just me:

My problem just disappeared - can't recall if I was running Lion or Mountain Lion at the time. I do use gfxCardStatus and just set my card to discrete only and it worked - then one day I set it to dynamic and the problem was gone. It does seem to be a software glitch - but one that was mysteriously 'fixed' for me.

Now, even on battery or adapter, I can dynamically switch with no blue tint. I don't know why, though, nor why some more users are having the problem.

This also works for me and I think it's a better workaround than using the gfxCardStatus app. Thanks!

I still have to logout and login again though, because with filevault switched on you already login before OS X starts up.

I have had this problem even though I did not have automatic login turned on. (It happened when I started Photoshop CS4.) I did find, though, that if I log off after ML (Mountain Lion) has loaded, and re-login, the problem is fixed. Definitely a better fix than gfxCardStatus! Thanks for the heads up!

By the way, I am running a standard drive, not an SSD, so I don't believe that the problem is related to the SSD.

I'm having the same problem that started after I upgraded to Mountain Lion. (I have the Early 2011 MBP). I noticed the screen having a blue tint whenever I used graphics intensive programs like running videos or using skype. As I recall it happened after I upgraded to Mountain Lion to 10.8.1. Logging out and then logging back in did not change the tint. If I set the graphics card to integrated only with gfxCardStatus- the color is normal, but when I change it to discreet only, the blue tint is back. It sounds like a software issue. Waiting for the next OS update/patch.

I can confirm that (re-)installing 10.8.1 fixes the issue. I don't recommend deleting cache files and so on for your own. I believe that that was the origin of my problem.

What were the steps you took to fix the problem?  I have 10.8.1 but the issues still exists.

Download the update from here and reinstall it. That'll restore everything what was messed up.

Just tried that but the clicking on the dmg file it says "the following disk images couldn't be opened".  Reason: invalid checksum.

    any ideas??

Then it broke during the download. Try re-downloading it. Also, do the following:

Open the Terminal and Finder. Write "shasum " (note the space) in the Terminal and drag'n'drop the file from the Finder into the Terminal. Press enter. The output in the Terminal should contain the string 883ab7dcd5dbe6add522e382349b08869ef19dbf. If it doesn't, it's (still) broken.

second download says the same.  Here's the output from terminal:

For me the checksum is totally fine. I can't tell where the problem is exactly. Just keep trying or use another Mac/network.

Hey, I have been following the conversation through e-mails as you've been talking. I followed the link and installed 10.8.1 again with no problems. And the blue tint doesn't show up when using my AMD Radeon card any more. THANKS paul8!!!

I can also confirm: so far, installing the 10.8.1 combo update again resolved the issue for me.

I also did an additional reboot just to be sure the issue doesn't return like it did after installing 10.8.1 via App Store Software Update.

Paul8, not sure where the problem was with the download, as I had the same error with Chrome and Safari.  Anyway downloaded using another Mac and transferred using USB

Installed the update and restarted, and lo and behold, it's (so far) fixed the blue tint issue.  So far I've tried the apps that triggered the tint, and did the same steps after reinstall and all seems well!!

You're a star, thank you so much!

    2 questions:

    1. how the **** did you find out about this fix?

    2. is there an easy way to make sure the graphics cards are switching, and not just stuck in the integrated mode?

    Thanks
