Since these only came out a little less than a week ago, its hard to say for sure. At this point only Apple knows and perhaps they'll be able to expand on it in the near future.

you know what, I'm just gonna go ahead and order a pair. I have a belkin shuffle adapter so it isn't a big problem if it indeed turns out the in-line remote doesn't work. I hope it does though..
when I get them I'll state here wheter they work or not, for the people who have the same question as I do.

Perfect. No better way to clear this up!

So I ordered a pair and today they got in with the mail. They are really nice and comfortable, but the remote indeed doens't work with the ipod shuffle 3rd gen. Fortunetly, with the belkin shuffle adapter it works just fine. I do find it strange though, because if you take a look at the user guide it actually says: " you can use the earphones with these models: ipod shuffle (3rd generation or later)" and also when they talk about voice over it says you can use for voiceover with again the ipod shuffle 3rd generation or later.
I have really no clue why the earpods aren't compatible as it's a fairly new device and much older ipods do work with them. Plus, the ipod shuflle 3rd gen was made to work with headphones with an inline remote as the ipod lacks any physical keys. Surely when they are both apple made, it should be possible to work right? I hope they can solve this issue in the near future by making a softwaee update to the ipod.
For now I can say that if you really want these and you want them to work with the shuffle 3rd gen, pick up a shuffle adapter for around $10. Otherwise don't buy these because you won't be able to change the volume or song.

I second this. Sound is great but you can't use the remote at all.

I know it's been almost a year since the last post, but I tried out my EarPods with my 3rd gen iPod Shuffle and it worked fine. I had full function of the volume and could select a playlist. Then, I synced my iPod Shuffle and now the EarPods won't work. It seems obvious that it's a software thing, and not at all a hardware issue.
I don't know, but maybe Apple could release an update for the 3rd gen iPod Shuffle.
