Help! How do I transfer my iphoto library from one macto another. I have managed it via a memory stick but after transfer I have duplicates of all my photos so now have about 10000 instead of 3000 photos.

Thanks

Sounds like you imported one Library to another.

Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:

Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...

But however you do choose to link the two machines...

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.

    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.

This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

"Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine."

This is what i did. However, i am getting an error message saying that "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto."

I have restored my Mac to factory settings, i have copied the iPhoto Library to an external drive, i want to import the library back again. please help

    Thank you.

    We need details

Like what are you doing? are you moving to a brandnew Mac? what version of iPhoto is on the old Mac - what version on the new Mac? Exactly how did you accomplish teh copy of the library?

Thanks Larry for your quick reply. Here is my story...

I have an old 2008 iMac model which was running Lion and iPhoto '11. it was running very slow so i decided to format it and start fresh. I copied the iPhoto Library to an extenral drive and then installed OSX Leopard that came with the machine then upgareded it to Snow Leopard, which i am currently using.

Now all i did is copied the iPhoto Library back to the Pictures folder (I have moved the original one) and the iPhoto won't open saying "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto." full message below.

Should i make a new Library or do i need to update something, or simply how to get my photos back again.

The current iPhoto version is 7.1.5 not sure about the old one though.

I really appreciate you help. Thanks.

Older versions of iPhoto will not open newer libraries - hence the message

"You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."

You used to have iPhoto '11 (version 9.x.x) - you replaced it with iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5) - you need to reinstall iPhoto '11 from the original source = the iLife '11 DVD you purchased of the App store (log in with the Apple ID you purchased with and download and install form the purchases tab)
