Q: Help on Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable

Hi there! Apologies in advance as I feel the question I am about to ask may be a silly one

I would like to display my Macbook on my tv. I bought a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable and tried plugging this into my macbook and TV but nothing seems to happen. Do I need to get some form of adaptor, even if both ends of the cable fit?

Sorry if this is a really silly question, I'm very confused!

It would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

What if anything do you see on your TV screen with the cable plugged in and both the MacBook and the TV on and the TV set to the correct source.

I have a Macbook 7,1 and when I plug it in and set to correct source there is nothing on the screen. I have tried with a second TV and it shows a message that says 'no input'. Thanks
