Sep 19, 2012 4:14 PM in response to b noirby mpower830,Tried that and it says it removed itunes.
Went to re-install and now I get a new message saying that it can't access c:/programfiles/x86/itunes because I am not an administrator or don't have administrator prviledges.
Found that a bit unusual since I'm on a laptop so it's not like I ever need to mess with priviledges. Do you know how to move around this?

Sep 19, 2012 4:21 PM in response to mpower830by b noir,Went to re-install and now I get a new message saying that it can't access c:/programfiles/x86/itunes because I am not an administrator or don't have administrator prviledges.
Hmmm.
There's a couple of things that might be in play here.
Let's try something relatively simple. Download and save a copy of the installer to your hard drive (don't run the install on line and don't start the install just yet):
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Now right-click on the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) that you downloaded and select "Run as administrator".
Does that go through any better for you?

Sep 19, 2012 4:31 PM in response to b noirby mpower830,I was hopeful, but I ended up with the same message.
"The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes. The installation cannot continue. Log on as administrator or contact your local administrator."
Plan B? Really appreciate your help by the way.
Thanks,
Michael

Sep 19, 2012 4:33 PM in response to mpower830by b noir,Okay.
It's also consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

Sep 19, 2012 5:35 PM in response to b noirby mpower830,It worked! It worked! It worked! It worked!
I ran the disk check and while it didn't list any files or indexes that were damaged, it somehow fixed whatever was amiss. I was then able to install itunes as an administrator, as you previously suggested, and I'm now listening to Grizzly Bear while browsing the store.
Thank you so much for your help, this was such a pain but there's no way I would have fixed it on my own.
Thanks,
Michael
