Make sure Mail.app is in the Applications folder inside the Macintosh HD folder. If it's not, the update can't find it.

Your screenshot is showing it's inside Office. It doesn't belong there. Move it out of there and into Applications by itself.

Now that it's in the right place, try reapplying the update. Otherwise, I'm stumped.

WZZZ is talking about the Combo Update v1.1 found at Http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 with is 1.01 GB in size.

For what it is worth, I have reinstalled the Combo Update v1.1 twice, but it didn't work.  I am stuck.

If WZZZ is talking about the Security Update, I will try that.  Not sure.

    I got the problem fixed.

Make sure that you have installed the Combo Update v1.1 then reinstall the Security Update (2012 - 004) and reboot and it should come up okay.

I've got the same problem - everything was fine until I ran the latest update. I've installed the combo update but I don't understand about security update - my mac says all software is up to date.

I've lost my emailing facility and all my emails - it's a disaster for my business.

Please please PLEASE can someone help?

Yes, I was talking about reapplying the Security Update, now that Mail is in the right location. But no harm in applying or reapplying the 10.6.8 Combo also.

As Apple clearly allows to move the mail app into a different place, it is not a valid option to make security updates that expect it, where it was installed originally. I have set up different folders for apps, i.e. office, games, net, tools etc... and dropped the applications there. So my mail.app is located in the subfolder "net". This did work flawlessly since 2009 now. All of the sudden mail.app does not work anymore since yesterday.

BTW mail is not the only app that gets fu**ed up by the update. I found 2 other programs but could recover them from my time maschine backups yesterday.

Moving all apps to the default folder and download gigs of data IS NOT AN OPTION.  If Apple does not want me to use their mail client, there are other options. At least until they fix this bug and provide a working update...

    Cheers,    Mike

I am with 10.6.8 because 10.7.x was unstable windows like bull**it.

I did not try 10.8 yet but from what I read I am not too optimistic.

I have the same problem, been racking my brain and reading **** all day to no avail. HELP! My mail IS in the apps folder but won't let me open. I too have applied two updates thinking it would fix it. I don't know how to reapply the update, it too says no new updates. Very ******.

Well I just spent a couple of hours restoring my whole system to how it was this morning, before the infamous Update. Thank God for Time Machine backups, that's all I can say!

I know it hasn't really cured the problem but I haven't time to experiment at the moment.

All I know is I'm steering WELL CLEAR of the latest update until I'm reassured it won't mess up my system!

Come on Apple - don't bully us into upgrading to Mountain Lion by pulling dirty tricks like that again :–(
