Apple tries to distance itself from Google. There is a Google YouTube app available on the AppStore, but as far as yesterday, it wasn't optimized for the iPad yet (it works on iPhone though).

Yeah, they got rid of the YouTube app by default. But it looks like you can download a YouTube app from the App Store (It shows up under iPhone apps but the system requirements show its compatible with iPad):
You could also create a WebClip that points to www.youtube.com. Just go to www.youtube.com, click on the Share button, and select "Add To Home Screen"

I have found that if i click on a link from an email that takes me to Youtube link, I can then navigate within youtube as I normally would

YouTube is not now part of iOS 6.
However, you can go to the App Store and do a search using YouTube. You can download several YouTube apps: YouTube (for the iPhone, a IPad app is in work), several users like Jasmine and YouPlayer.
