Q: Aperture 3.4 crashes on startup how do I downgrade?

after upgrading to 3.4 (from 3.3.x) Aperture crashes on startup.  the install was done from the manual download from the apple site, since the app store does not recognize my pre appstore install.

hmmm, that is exactly the same crash as in this thread by "fof": Re: Aperture 3.4 will not open after 10.8.2 installed by fof: Aperture crashes, when it tries to send Notifications and set the default image capture. Fof tried everything, and sofar we found no solution. Reinstall did not work. But Aperture works, when launched from a different account. Is that the same in your case? Have you tried to run aperture from a new user account?

Do you use any plug-ins? Third party haxies?

William, for a lot of us, deleting the .plist file is indeed the fix and reinstalling the app is unnecessary. Clearly there is a major Facebook bug, and since the facebook login is stored in the .plist file, that is solving the issue for a lot of us.

@LeonieDF, Yes! I can in fact launch Aperture from another user account from which it launches just fine. But from my own it doesn't work. I then tried moving the ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture folder out of the way, trashed the prefs to be sure, deleted the app, reinstalled it again from the App Store but, it keeps on crashing :-(

You must have something installed, that is triggered from your account (for example from your startup items) and causes the crashes, but is not activated when you use a different account. Can you think of any plug-in you are using, any helper application that may change your user settings?

Deleting .plist work for me.  Thanks for the quick fix on that one.  Ton of work to do tonight and I was freaking out.

Yesss! Aperture is up and running again!! The fix seemed to be deleting the ImageCapture preferences from ~/Library/Preferences and from the ByHost folder too. Just changing ImageCapture preferences didn't cut it, though. I had to move them to the trash for Aperture to launch again. Maybe they already were, or got corrupted after the update. Aperture 3.x had no problem with it at all.

Many, many thanks for pointing me in the right direction (in other thread you mentioned above).

    Cheers.

Thanks. My rMBP with 10.8.2 had the same problem, deleting preferences fixed it. Let's hope Apple can get that that Facebook connection running properly...

Does anyone read anymore? The answer has been posted, yet many continue to ask or question it.

Deleting the preferences is NOT the solution, it merely a band-aid fix since it blows away your facebook settings. Add the facebook settings to Aperture again and BOOM!

The real solution is to either:

    A. Delete the Aperture application and re-install from the App Store.

    B. Delete the Aperture application, re-install from original media, then update via Software Update.

Personally I couldn't give a rat fart about facebook not working.  The other "solution" was quick, worked, and allowed me to get done what I needed to tonight.  And I don't know about anyone else, but I couldn't tell you where my original Aperture media was if my life depended on it.

I'm probably unique here, but I'm an Aperture user since 1.0.  That said, I can't download from the App store, and my installation media is 2.0.  I USED to be able to download the app from my account page at the Apple Store, but that's gone now.

So, while deleting prefs work, I'm sort of stuck trying to recover my library without losing all my prefs.  Any suggestions?

Speaking of reading, maybe you missed my post last night that deleting the preferences file and re-entering FB settings solved the problem...in a lot less time than it takes to reinstall the software...

Try if this download link for the trial version still works: if yes, you can unlock it with your serial number and then upgrade again.

    Mike,

You may need to contact Apple. I too have been an Aperture user/customer since 1.0, but I have always gotten my upgrades on physical media. If you bought an Aperture 3.0 upgrade on digital media, then your best bet is to contact Apple and see if you can convert your license to an App Store equivalent, or at least get the physical media since you can no longer access the digital version.

THANK YOU!  That worked perfectly.  I didn't have to enter my serial number.  Just downloaded the file above, did software update to 3.4 and I'm back up and runnng.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!
