Mine is doing the same thing.  Doesn't say what the error is, just that an error occured.  Doing it through iTunes, it downloads for about 30 minutes then update fails, server timed out.

Disable ALL security software (firewall, antivirus, etc.) running on your computer while updating

Mine was hanging last night when I tried updating... the fix was this- do a cloud or computer backup... then update from within iTunes while connected.  That worked for me.  I ended up resetting it completely, but was able to restore once iOS6 was installed.

Just make sure it's connected to your computer and your iTunes is the latest version.

I attempted to update my iPhone 4 from ioS 5 to ioS 6 from iTunes on my laptop using Windows 7 OS, I had downloaded the new ioS 6 and started the update on the iPhone 4 and everything was going routine until the phone had been going thought what I though was the update process when an error window opened up and said that an error had occured and the iPhone 4 could not be updated. I have never had a problem like this before and it caught me off guard and I did not note all the information in the error window, but it did not appear to indicate anything other than that I would have to abort the update and did not think it would be that big of a problem. However I could not get iTunes to recognize the iPhone 4 after this and still cannot after rebooting the laptop a few times and also trying to reset the phone a few times as well. The iPhone 4 just has the image of a USB cable with an arrow pointing to an icon for iTunes. I have tried to get iTunes to recognize the iPhone, but cannot accomplish it to do anything else with the phone. It seems like the phone is in a state of where it does not have enough software loaded to do anything or I don’t know how to get it to. Any suggestions how I can get my iPhone 4 back into service. Note: iTunes still recognizes my iPad and iPods, so iTunes seems to be okay to me.

I have the same problem and my phone just has the image of a USB cable with and arrow directed toward an icon of iTunes. I wish iTunes would recognize it so I could try to restore it and get my phone back. Please advise if you find a fix!

I have been there and I can get to the recovery mode on the phone, but never see anything in iTunes indicating that it sees the phone. I have the lates Rel and Ver of iTunes and a current back of my phone if I could just get iTunes to recongnize the phone.

I got the same message. It says iOS 6 has been downloaded but after it verifies the update I get a message that says "Unable to Install Update. An error occurred installing iOS 6."  I have plenty of free GBs. I have tried over the past 3 days and get the same message each time.  Installed it on my IPad without a problem 3 days ago but the iPhone4 has been a problem.   What's up?
