Sep 21, 2012 12:38 PM in response to DANDILLON33by brownee,Maybe that only applies to YOU sending out Group messages and not them coming to you. I don't know that for sure...just thinking aloud.

Sep 21, 2012 12:50 PM in response to DANDILLON33by Chris CA,As brownee suggested, turning off Group Messaging refers to you sending them, not receiving them.

Sep 21, 2012 1:02 PM in response to DANDILLON33by DANDILLON33,Thanks for the replies.
It still doesn't make much sense to me. I would like to think that if I didn't want to send a group message, I just simply wouldn't. I don't need an on/off switch for something I can just not do. I guess that poses the question:
How do I turn off "RECIEVING" group messages?
I even deleted the original message and all of the threads at one point and it still continued. Granted, it was a pretty funny and interesting conversation, but having my phone repeatedly go nuts for three hours at work is quite annoying.

You don't.
Group Messages are sent as individual messages to everyone in the group.

Sep 21, 2012 1:50 PM in response to Chris CAby DANDILLON33,Right. But when each person replies to the original message that someone sent with me included, they all come through on my phone whether I reply to it or not.. How do I turn that off?

Send them an email and tell them to quit replying to the group

Oct 8, 2012 4:05 PM in response to DANDILLON33by CALNY,Just came back frrom the Apple store having gone there with this very same issue. The Apple employees really struggled trying to figure this out but finally did.
The problem is iMessaging. If iMessaging is turned on and the message you receive is from an iPhone, you have no control of group messaging even if group messaging is turned off in your settings.
Try turning off iMessaging and you will see that group messaging to iPhones will stop. We played with it in the store for about 30 minutes and it was the only way group messaging to fellow iPhone users would stop. There is no way for the person who received the text message not to reply to the entire group.
Apple really needs to add a sub setting in iMessaging that enables you to turn group messaging off for iMessages.

Oct 8, 2012 4:25 PM in response to DANDILLON33by electronicsguy, its just by design because apple thinks it somehow gets them more business from who knows who..
just like they refuse to have simple things like toggles for basic settings easily accessible... no logic, just stupid mbas who make these decisions.

Nov 23, 2012 9:15 AM in response to DANDILLON33by r_dizzle,I am curious about regional differences in SETTINGS. I don't have any options in MESSAGES for turning OFF group messaging.
I am on an iPhone 5, running latest iOS6 and in Canada on ROGERS. I can confirm my cousin the UK has same issue.
The options I can change under Messages in settings are:
- iMessage (on)
- Send Read Receipts (on)
- Send as SMS (on)
- Send & Receive (4 addresses)
- MMS Messaging (on)
- Show Subject Field Count (off)
- Character Count (off)

Mar 20, 2013 12:51 PM in response to DANDILLON33by nasja,I have an alternative way of stopping this annoying feature. For the people involved, I go to their contact information, then to "edit", then to "text tone" and choose silent or none. (can be downloaded if not available in your phone.) They can go on texting but you won't be bothered by the text tone.

May 31, 2013 5:18 PM in response to nasjaby feltso, but if they message you individually, you won't be notified.

Jul 1, 2013 6:39 PM in response to CALNYby chad eric,iMessage has been turned off ever since I blocked a user through Verizon, but I was still getting texts via iMessage. Definitely another place on iMessage which needs revision. I also have group turned off. I am still getting these group texts from mom with everyone replying. I wish your solution worked for my iphone 5
