I have the exact same problem, a new cable is being sent out to me so hopefully this will resolve my problem. I don't have another cable I can test at the moment. Not happy to be honest

Same (or very similar) issue. Plugged cable into PC USB port (after removing previous generation cable) and it first got VERY hot, very fast, and then the PC shut down. Cable won't charge from wall adapter and now PC just instantly shuts down if I plug the cable into it.
Hope these are available at the local Apple store so they can give me a replacement.

They aren't available now, as far as I know, but the people at the store said they should be sometime next week.

Update: We got a replacement at the Apple Store today, but they don't have any for sale still.

I'm having the same issue except:
-My cable is in perfect condition, nothing like the picture above
-I live 60+ minutes to the nearest apple store
If I plug my iPhone into my Windows computer or Outlet (I've tried many outlets at home) my phone never charger or is recignized by my computer.
My iPhone 5 ends up dying, and only THEN will it start to charge....back up to 3%. Now it seems to be in a perpetual loop
Is anyone else experiencing this? Anything I can do? All I did was restore from an iCloud backup
Edit: it will only charge to my Macbook Pro Retina...why in the world is this?

I am also not able to charge my new phone and was on hold with apple for an hour. They said they have had no calls about this issue and have had no emails. My phone is almost dead. My cable looks fine it is just not giving the phone any power from the wall or when I hook it up to the computer.
I guess I will be going to a store today as well, not cool

I didn't get power when I put my cable in at first. Turned it the other way and it charged. The cable may fit both ways but it only charges one way, or at least my did.

Same problem here.....on the phone with Apple Support now.....

Same issue. Intermittant charging with the AC Adapter, but did manage to get it set up with a 1st gen MBA. When plugged into the USB port on a new 11" MBA, it either doesn't recognize the iPhone (left USB port) or it immediately shuts down the computer (right USB port). And no, I'm not making this up.
On the phone with Apple last night for about 90 minutes (after ATT for 45 minutes.....that was fun). Was bumped up to real support tech who is "researching the problem" and who is to call me back at 11 am this morning. (You do have to give them some credit for customer support) I've also made a pre-emptive appointment at an Apple store (60 miles away) for this afternoon in case I'm told to pickup a new phone.
Odd that they can build a flawless phone that is clearly the technological bellweather but they can't get the cable right. I also wonder how they can release the phone but not have the cables and adapters ready. I was ready to just buy a couple of cables and call it a day.

My Macbook Pro for a workaround charger only worked for so long
I called AppleSupport and because we can't do enough tests to see if it's the cable or the phone, I'm just going to replace the cable.
This of course takes 3-4 business days since the Apple Store is very out of my way.

For those interested in the ending of my troubles, I ended up biting the bullet, going to the Apple Store, buying a new cable, and it seems to work just fine.
The other cable will be replaced via "Express" excahnge.

My IPhone 5 has intermittent charging, and is the same when connected to the iMac. I have found that if I reboot the iPhone it starts charging as soon as it starts up again. It would seem it is a software bug not the cable?
My advice to people running out of charge is reboot phone while plugged into socket. Worked for me but not ideal!!
