I never said it was or was not an issue in iOS6. I merely stated that there are many more threads about very similar issues many of which are unrelated to any iOS update and provided some steps to troubleshoot.
Place blame where you want, wait on Apple to fix it (if an issue exists), or be proactive and take steps to resolve the issue now.
Frankly, until you rule out basic troubleshooting, declaring the issue as an "iOS6 update issue" is not very smart.
As noted by BubbleSheep, the headphone trick rectified their issue, which leads me to believe it is not an iOS6 issue. If it were, a basic troubleshooting step would not resolve it, and there would be thousands, if not millions of users experiencing the same issue... a dozen or so people in one thread having a similar issue does not make for a software bug.

I understand what you mean by pointing the fingers too early, but I must say that I haven't any success in carrying out basic troubleshooting procedures such as the headphone, the dock, fresh reinstall, reboot, system settings changes, after which I decided to post this question in attempt to get an answer. I am aware of the previous issues people had with their audio speakers but as far as am aware I don’t believe this is the same. This thread has over 400 people looking at it and the problem isn't minor either. I would appreciate that instead of criticise this thread you at least have some understanding and focus your energy into actually helping the few who have experienced this issue or not at all.

I'm also having trouble with my speaker. Just after a reboot it only works for 1 second, when i slide to unlock. With my earphones plugged in everything works fine. Alarm is the only thing that gives sound through te speaker.

Yes, it's normal, there is only one speaker on the bottom of the iPhone. The other is the microphone.

I have the exact same problem! After upgrade there is no audio on the phone unless I use headphones, the second that I take headphones out the volume control disappears and there is no audio.

I have come to understand that the issue lies with the IPhone 4s speaker proximity sensor. This issue doesn’t exist with all IPhone 4s users as it has only affected several people. The sensor will not operate with the new update (reasons are not known by me) this is why the issue has been noticed by many off us as soon as we updated. The way to resolve the problem is to visit an apple store or an apple certified store and get it repaired (if you have warrant it should cover it). From there on you wouldn't get this problem again with future updates.
I will be happy to answer any questions you may have as to how I got to this answer.

My iPhone 4S developed the same issue the past few days. Tried resetting, shutting the phone off, flipping the vibrate button on and off but nothing works.
No ability to use the speaker phone, incoming calls do not have any sound, no text sounds, alarm sounds, or keyboard sounds, etc. Can talk on the phone and hear others talking to me but that's about it. Phone has not been dropped, not damaged and not exposed to water. Going back to swap this phone out again...
Maybe this time they won't give me another refurbished/remanufactured phone on a warranty exchange. Speaking from experience, they are NOT the same as new iPhones. This one has been used for less than 100 hours of talk time and its on the fritz. The last one never worked right but I tried troubleshooting the dropped calls/poor sound quality with them for two weeks before swapping it out for this one.
Hope they are working to fix these issues...never had cell phone issues like this before!

Is there any indication that the issue will be fixed with in a future software update? I have had the same issue after the update to iOS6 on my 4s. For me it seems to be getting stuck in an Airplay mode. For example when I'm in the music app the Airplay icon appears in the bottom left with no volume slider beside it. Pressing the airplay icon gives me the choice of selecting the dock connector for output or the Apple TV for output.
I have also tried a complete restore to no avail.
Another interesting annomaly is that message alerts do not come through, even when the phone is off silent mode. But this is not the case all of the time, only some of the time. And sometimes, I get half a message sound before the phone decides that it shouldn't be making any noise.
How long did the repair take for you?

After upgrading my iPhone 4S to iOS6 my music dock no longer plays. It will charge the phone but no audio. All other audio modes work fine.
In a similar manner, my car charger which used to have no effect on playback now stops playback and eliminates the audio controls if I plug it in.
How does one file a bug report?

My iphone 3GS was working fine till yesterday when I upgraded to IOS6, now the sound alerts to keyboard, SMS, unlock, phone calls etc. have stopped. The music plays fine, while choosing the alerts the sound is fine and alarm works fine. Please help me with a fix.
