I am subscribed to several pobcasts on both iTunes and the new Podcast app. iTunes is set up to sync with my iPhone 4 and only have unplayed podcasts synced. However after listening to a podcast using the app today (it's now marked as played in the app) when I sync with iTunes the copy on iTunes is still marked as unplayed. I can sync music and everything else fine. Any ideas?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

I don't think Podcasts app sync with iTunes yet. I assume it's supposed to but I can't get it to work. Maybe the next version will fix it.

    I'm also having this issue.

The more I use the app the more it looks like no one tested before releasing it.

The syncing issues appeared within the first 5 minutes of using the app.

    Here's what I've found:

    1. Even if you have podcast syning turned off in iTunes any podcasts you download in the app are still pushed into iTunes and remain as unplayed there even after listening to them in the app.

    2. If you have podcast syncing turned on, if you don't specifically sync a podcast to the the iOS device then on the first sync any episodes you downloaded in the app are pushed into iTunes. During a second sync the episodes are removed from the app but remain in iTunes, played & unplayed. This problem occurs even when you have "keep all" set in the app for that podcast.

    3. If you have syncing turned on and you have a particular podcast set to sync to the phone, any episodes downloaded in the app are pushed into iTunes and the episodes won't get deleted in the app like in #1 (two problems solved), however, the syncing ends there. Your place isn't marked in iTunes during a sync and the iTunes copy remains as unplayed forever (until you listen to it again in iTunes or the Music app, or manually mark it as played). Of course, this means that even after listening to an episode in the app and deleting it, the next time you sync it is still in the Music app so the downloaded file pops back up again in the podcast app.

I don't really see the point of the app if you are still at the mercy of iTunes, even when you have syncing turned off. I think a new version of iTunes is required to fix these problems and not the next iOS version.

I've the same problem. The only way to resolve it, is after seing or listening to the podcast in the podcast app, go to the Music or Video App and go through all the same episodes fastforward to the end. This way Itunes will say they are seen or listen. However, this is really very stupid, looks like someone was working on Jelly Bean not IOS. And of course, using the Video and Music Apps does not remove the "unplayed" from the Podcast App. So frankly at the moment this new app is completely worthless.

You don't have to do this.  If you go into the podcast details (tap the next to the name) there is an option to "mark as played" or "mark as unplayed" to toggle whether you want it to be counted as already viewed/listened to.

However, I agree it's a staggering oversight and incredibly poor planning to release an app that duplicates iTunes functionality and not make it sync.  Do Apple not realize that some people listen to podcasts both on their mobile and desktop devices?

I can't freaking believe they STILL haven't fixed this even though they just pushed out a new version of iTunes and the podcast APP.

yep, guess its back to lugging the classic iPod around for podcasts, thought I'd relegated it to the car...

Does the syncing with iTunes problem still exist now that the Music app now longer shows podcasts when the Podcast app is installed?

Yes as far as I can see they have made no changes in this regard. When I installed the new iTunes a note popped up asking if I would allow it to use iCloud to sync song and podcast positions and I thought aha this is it they are finally going to fix this!

    But no.

It hasn't made a blind bit of difference. Listen to podcasts on iPhone , sync with computer and they are all back to being marked as unplayed.

With some of the changes coming in the next version of iTunes I have a feeling that iCloud syncing will be extended to podcasts.

Apple seems to be moving further and further away from the centralized PC/Mac syncing model.

Thanks for pointing out that turning off subscriptions on the iPhone makes it sync with iTunes normally!
