Why do Apple do this to us? They did it when they release Lion (Broke Parental Controls), now they've done it again.

First off, they've broken the time limits - if you have a bedtime set up AND a time limit, the time limits are ignored. You need to clear the bedtimes to make it work.

Now I've just found that they've stuffed the web filters too - I have an account for my oldest kid that merely had time limits set on it, and no website filtering. With this setup, we can't get to youtube.com.

If I go into the settings and clear her Parental Controls, youtube.com works absolutely fine.

If I re-enable Parental Controls and ONLY set a time limit, youtube.com no longer works despite 'Allow unrestricted access to websites' being selected.

Has anyone any ideas? Theres NO record in the logs of any websites being blocked, YouTube simply presents an empty page. How can I diagnose what's going on?

Yes, this caused my eldest son to get a major negative first impression about OS X 10.8! "It's broken! Nothing works!!". I.e. YouTube did not load... Didn't load in Chrome either.

Luckily I could calm him down after turning Parental Controls OFF for now. But at the moment he has no time limits so I must fight for the access to our Mac ;-)

I hope this will be fixed soon.

I agree this is very frustrating.

I want to restrict hours ont he machine, that's it. If I pick not to restrict web pages, it should allow https web pages. if I restrict web pages and add always allow exceptions things like https://tools.google.com, it still blocks them.

In order to make his machine useable for school work, with 10.8.2 I have to turn off all parental controls completely.

unfortunately, that link seems to be dead.

What you need is in here:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11401357#11401357#11401357

I solved the problem for my machine once I got onto 10.8.2 and executed the following line in terminal:

    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -mcxset /users/username com.apple.familycontrols.logging web always -bool false

(replacing username with the short name of the user I was trying to set up with Parental Control time limits)

There's details in the thread as to why this works (disabling some logging that's unnecessary for what you need). Why Apple haven't fixed this properly, I have no idea, obviously home users are below Facebook users in pecking order but let me know how you get on with that, good luck!

So did this solve the issue and parental controls now worked?

When you say username, I assume you must do this for each user on the machine?

    Thanks in advance

I did insert what I posted above and had success and solved the problem for my iMac 10/6.8 so I hope this helps someone as it took me forever to stumble onto this: The following was executed in terminal:

    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -mcxset /users/username com.apple.familycontrols.logging web always -bool false

(replacing username with the short name of the user I was trying to set up with Parental Control time limits)
