Migration is an important process that you must complete if you want to have all the information to be transfered to your newer mac. The migration assistant is a useful way to do that. It is actually, uploading all the content from one side and then dowloading it on the other side. The time depends on your internet speed, and more important than that, you can easily get past your internet capacity, so be sure to check that too. My opinin, is not to make a Migration, instead of that, using home sharing for iTunes and copying the important documents and/or files to a portable drive.

You must be using wireless. If you are in a hurry stop. Connect via FW or Ethernet and start again (but delete the partial user account already created by the wireless connection)

Migration Assistant does not use the Internet at all, thus the Internet speed or capacity has no effect on the transfer speed.

Hi Csound1 - I just purchased a MacBook Pro on Saturday (I'm in London UK.)  Yesterday I tried to do the data migration from my old Windows laptop to new mac book pro - wirelessly using Windows Migration Assistant.  It started off around 28 hours until completion and this morning this has only gone down to 24 hours. It is taking far too long.  Today I sourced Ethernet cable and want to go this route as it seems quicker.  Please can you advise (I am no way a techie so will need plain English and step by step response please ) :

    i) if I stop the wireless data transfer process will it "save" the data that has been transferred over so far? If so, when I set up a transfer on the Ethernet, will my Mac automatically know what has been saved so far and just pick up data transfer from the point I cancelled it when doing it wirelessly?

ii) or do I need to delete any data that has been stored so far on the Mac and start again?  if I start again, how do I delete this data transferred so far?  can you give me step by step to do this please

iii) setting up an Ethernet cable transfer. How do I do this?  Do I just connect my Windows laptop to my macbook pro with the grey Ethernet cable?  or do I need to connect each machine to  my Wifi box?  I have heard conflicting advice on this so need to know definitively what I must do here.  Do I need one Ethernet cable or 2?  Again, step by step instructions would be great.

thanks in advance for your help

    best regards Annabelp

Stop the transfer, delete all that was transferred and start again. Connect the 2 machines together using ethernet.

Hi Csound 1 - thanks for your response.  Once I cancel the transfer, how do I delete all that was transferred?  Where on my new Mac do I need to go to delete it and what do I need to click etc?  Is it in System Preferences?  Also regards connecting the 2 machines toghter.  So I put one end of hte grey Ethernet cable into my Mac and the other end into my Windows laptop and that's it?  I don't have to connect anything via my WiFi router?

    Thanks so much . . . .

It will be in the partially completed user account, delete the account.

Hi again - sorry to keep asking questions. I really am most non-technical.  Where will I find "user account" detials so I can delete the account?

Hi Csound - I know this i really cheeky but hoping you can help me wiht something as you were really helpful yesterday.  I migrated all my data over via Ethernet but it has created a new account and now I have 2 accounts and need to delete one but the one I want to delete, it won't let me.  Please see full details here - be grateful if you could advise . . .  http://https://discussions.apple.com/message/19744970#19744970

Yes, you should have used Setup Assistant instead of Migration Assistant, anyhow. Make sure that you have administrator privileges in the account you want to keep, login to it and delete the other.

Thanks Csound - yes I will try that when I get home later.  One more thing - perhaps I shuold just restore my Mac to factory settings (as it was day I bought it before I switched it on) and redo the whole Windows migration from scratch and via Set Up as it should have been done?  Or will deleting the unwanted second account basicaly achieve the same thing anyway?
