I hope this works for you guys. Mine did the same thing today and so I phoned the careplan but they wanted me to box it up and ship it off to be repaired, having only had it a week I thought aargh.
Thankfully seeing your posts I realiesed I was not alone so got back onto apple.
They talked me through re-installing os x mountain lion and hey presto after 30 minutes of re-installing my DVD player now works.
To do this shut down then turn on and imediately press command and R
DO NOT release your fingers until the re-install screen comes up, then follow the on screen guide.
Hope this helps you all

That's good info, but as I have 5 machines, 2 upgraded and 3 new with the same issue, there has to be something less daunting then having to reinstall the OS to make this work.

Yeah, I'm not sure about this ... DVD Player is crashing for me on a brand new, fresh out of the box Mac mini, with (presumably) freshly installed OS. I'll wait around for some other ideas before I reinstall the entire OS.

I too am having this issue on 13" MacBook Pro.
Apple care said to re-install Mtn Lion which I did but still not working.
VLC, handbrake and MDRP also not playing reading discs.. Not good

After reinstalling Mountain Lion I immediately opened DVD player. It came up with a dialog box to set the region appropriate. I changed it to my region (Europe), inserted a DVD and it worked.
Then I did a combined update tot 10.8.2. It still worked.
Could the wrong region code perhaps cause the troubles?

My imac was only a week old when this happened.
Since re-installing the dvd works perfectly and I have also now re-installed the update to 10.8 etc
It works fine.
As we seem to all have new machines, I can only think that this is a common error.

Same problem here with brand new Mac. Re-installed Mtn Lion as suggested, reset DVD region (2 for europe) and now working properly. Update for 10.8 causes no issues either. If re-installing Mtn Lion on wi-fi, suggest you run it over night as can take a few hours, your Mac will be ready as normal when you wake up as re-starts automatically...
Apple need to sort this one!!!!!!!

Just spent over an hour reinstalling Mountain Lion on my Mac Mini. It did NOT fix the problem. DVD player still crashes. This is absurd!

I purchased this new MacBook Pro 2 weeks ago in the UK. First use of DVD player today, which crashed. - im not inclined to re-install the whole OS for one app. Ive just uploaded a 3rd party DVD player instead. (interestingly, there is a version for iPAD, which wont require conversion of DVD files.)
Not a good week for Apple reliability...
- Apple needs to get this fixed in an update, and quickly.

Same problem here! DVD only crashes if a DVD is in the drive. When no DVD is in drive DVD player opens fine and does not crash. Once a DVD is inserted it quits immediately. Did the whole reinstall thing with no success. REALLY? Is this what I paid $2700 for a laptop for? C'mon Apple! You are better than this! Back to Apple Care call in the morning! Apple, solve this bug ASAP!

A: Roll back OS to version 10.8.1
B: Open DVD player app and select your region.
C: Update to 10.8.2 again.
