10.7.5 Quick Fix Back to 10.7.4

OK so you've updated to 10.7.5 and Time Machine is now slow and spotlight is forever running.

 

Well I just couldn't be bothered with waiting for Apple to sort this out.

 

The simple solution for me was to restore the whole system from Time Machine.

 

Here's how.

 

Make sure you copy all the stuff that you haven't backed up manually to a spare drive.

 

This fix will restore everything including 10.7.4 and wipe out all unbacked up data.

 

Hold command R down and reboot with your time machine drive connected.

 

You'll then have a few options to restore, so select time machine, find the file in the list thatis prior to 10.7.5 (it shows this in the listing)

 

Hit restore and depending on how much data, there will be an estimated time displayed. In my case about 45 minutes.

 

Spotlight is now fine and re-indexing within Minutes

 

Time Machine is back to normal and does not Hang.

 

I hope this is of help to someone if you're in a fix and as frustrated as I was.

 

Problem now solved till Apple do a better update.

    Good procedure. That will work.

     

    Following this procedure, if you performed any work after updating to 10.7.5 and you need to recover it, "Enter Time Machine" and restore the individual files as necessary.

    Thanks for the tip! 

     

    Did you need to reinstall any software?  I may need to use this fix to go back to 10.7.4 after a big issue with color calibration software with 10.7.5.

    Wish I can do that but my oldest backup is form yesturday

    One of the advice I followed was to erase my backup drive. Now I have no 10.7.4 to restore from

    OMG, so sorry for you.  There has been so many dangerous workarounds suggested when the option favoured by Apple techs is restore to 10.7.4. Pity the politics prevents them publishing the advice, but it would not be possible for anyone not using TM so they probably are just keeping quiet til .6 arrives.

     

    The advice given elsewhere to disable Spotlight is only good for a once only fix to enable one final TM backup before reverting to the day before the disastrous update was innocently accepted in good faith. That at least allows you to get back files worked on in the meantime.

     

    My only problem with this shift back to the good 10.7.4 has been that I also upgraded Aperture so all photos added since the crap update are in a version of aperture library that may not open in 10.7.4. And I lost the will to even try and workaround that one.

    @peter_watt, @badga: Thank you for your concern. I wish I had read 'restore to 10.7.4' ahead of the other more risky solutions. I have turned off Time Machine for now and am allowing Spotlight to index which so far has been stuck at 2 days to finish for the past 2 days.

    well i know what it's like .. I did spend 2 days messing about waiting for spotlight to finish indexing, but you may find it just stays at 2 days and gets worse, mine went up to 2 months after a while which is where i got to the point of restoring the whole system from TM.... this really does look like a stitch up for all Lion users to go over to ML

    So whats the problem with 10.7.5? Haven't seen anything that is causing any problems on my Macs nor any that I service?
