Do the iPod Disk diagnostics as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem but helps in troubleshooting, the loud cracking computer noise maybe the Hardisk is failing.

Although your Retract, Realloc and Pendinbg are zeroed, most likely using a 3rd Party HD Partition tools, the High Start/Stops numbers, would be indicative of a failing drive. So it would save you lots of frustration, by replacing the iPod hardisk. But change the way you are using the iPod, which maybe causing the damage like putting it in a environment above 50C with or very high vibration, but maybe it was failing at source.
Have a nice day!.
