This is why Apple continues to produce products with little to no quality control... because the faithful don't care!   You allow them to continue to produce products year after year and they take advantage of it too!

I won't allow it. I am returning any iPhone 5 with a defect out of box...  I paid big bucks for it and I want what they said... the BEST iPhone ever made.  Best quality and fit and finish EVER!

I am holding Apple to it.  The marketing hype is going to cost them dearly for that... I just got an iPhone white and it has light leaks.... it's going back tomorrow for another exchange!  Hopefully as these returns will wake Apple up!

The white one won't be any different brotha. Mine is scratched in about 5 different spots. You need to do what the other folks did, go through as many boxes as it takes. When Apple has a gigantic pile of scratched phones, then the message will hit home with them.

I know I thought about that but I seriously just don't trust it... Even if the phone is perfect, what I've learned is that this coating is FLAKY and even a perfect black one will look like garbage in a couple short months... I think the white will agr better bc the black is definitely gonna look bad based on how weak this coating is

Ah I see. I would go with the white as well then. Just make sure it isn't scratched up like mine and many others.

I went back tonight and they had a phone that was acceptable. The whole situation was just silly though. Very non-Apple.

So after 3 trips to the Apple store, three trips to the AT&T store and countless hours wasted on hold with both companies customer service departments I finally have a barely acceptable iPhone 5. There are still two minor cosmetic flaws, but it just isn't worth wasting any more time getting the run around from either of these companies that clearly do not care about their customers. Apple has, for the first time in my long relationship with them, let me down. I pay a premium for what I thought was a better product, I hope this is not indicative of things to come from Apple.

I ended up with a new iPhone that I cannot return to AT&T since it was an exchange for the one I actually bought. Honestly, the whole situation has ujust been ridiculous.

The most infuriating part was listening to multiple managers at the Apple Store tell me that they were sorry that they didn't have a phone that met "my expectations". As though this was somehow my fault. I didn't make the phone and put in a box with scratches all over it. I expected a phone that looks like the one they advertise, and to be honest, I still don't have that, but I do have something close.

Buyer beware... If your phone is damaged out of the box you will be treated like it is your fault and passed around between departments and managers while Apple and AT&T hope you just go away... after they get your money of course.

This truly frightens me as I'm afraid the one I get in the mail will be flawed even WORSE than mine, and then I'll really be screwed.

I don't have an Apple store nearby where I can just tear through boxes. If this next phone is utterly trashed, I'm gonna have to keep it or sell it. I can't believe Apple has NOT addressed this yet.

Had the same problem as everyone else, here is the story: purchased the black 32 GB on Firday from a Verizon store. On Saturday noticed that there was chiping in the bevel of the aluminum band on the right side right where it met the front glass. Kinda hard to notice unless you were really looking. Went to my local Apple store today and showed it to the guys working the Genuis Bar. He agreed that it was a defective unit and switched it out for a brand new phone. I watched him open the box. I made sure the new phone was flawless before he activated it. Overall the whole thing took less then 30 minutes. I have to say that the person who helped me didnt seem at all suprised and immediatly agreed to swap out my phone. When I was leaving another of the techs told me that he had just returned his personal phone this weekend for a new one. Bottom line from what I can tell is that the techs working in the Apple stores know this is a problem and at least some of them are willing to help you out.....

That is the kind of stuff I want to see. Written well and descriptive.

Quite sorry you had to go through that.

As you said, It's either wait 2-3 weeks for apple (who don't seem like they are just gonna leave it the way it is as they said aluminum gets damaged easily, which it kinda does) or AT&T which takes 30 days for a replacement.

I believe that, the phones weren't damaged right from the box but got scratched in shipping. I assume apple won't take it lightly. But even if you get a unscratched one. Like Phil said, its gonna have scratches all over it in a day because of the material. So i'd stick with it till further updates from Apple who ain't gonna sit there forever hand in hand.

You are not alone here. I was lucky to get my hands on the iPhone 5 64GB (white) where it was released in Australia on 21/09/12 at the Apple store without a long queue. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed that there were 2 minor nicks on the silver bezel and a small scuff on the Apple logo. I was able to get a replacement on the spot. Then, as soon as I opened the replacement stock, I found big scuffs at the back cover. So, I talked to the guys at the Apple store and requested for another replacement. Finally after going through the unpleasant experiences, I came home with a good perfect iphone 5 with no scratches/imperfections.

As far as I know, the guys at the Apple store in Australia are quite helpful in sorting this problem. The replacement was done on the spot without any hassles providing that they have enough replacement stock and done within 14 days of the invoice date.

Yes, you definitely need to address this to apple since you received a defective product. You might need to make a genius bar reservation for a swap. Just bear in mind, Apple will replace it with a sealed new phone if returned within 14 days. Otherwise they will replace it with a refurbished one.

I wanted to add a data point to this discussion, which was very helpful to me when I discovered a crack in my screen this weekend.  I live in the U.S. (Seattle) and received my black phone via UPS last Friday.  It was a 32GB model that had been shipped directly from China.  It had a 1-2cm horizontal hairline crack in the screen that started on the left side.  There was also a small nick in the body on the upper right hand corner.  The screen crack was almost invisible for the first 2 days but by Sunday had become more apparent and it was difficult not to notice it.  I was worried because it was more than just a surface scratch...you could see that it was an actual crack through the glass.  On Monday I took it to the local Apple store and they replaced it for me with no hastle whatsoever.  They let me open the replacement in the store and we both verified that it was free of visible defects.

wow , I had a scratch on mine 16 Gig White  from Telstra (Australia) , replaced it straight away no issue as they inspect before handing to you.

simple process right, open the box enter the sim, inspect unit, both agree ok,  user signs or pays.

a Telco can claim damage more then a user, Telstra Australia have a great process.

and Australia was the first country to get  iPhone 5 so they had no issue why did AT&T , Verizon etc. I use to live in San francisco so I know the hoop jumping with USA Telco's
