The voice command works on my device as well. The podcast app is installed so the smart playlist "Newest podcasts" looks empty. But with a voice command "Play playlist newest podcasts" the list starts playing.

This is when I hate Apple just that little bit. The technology is there, the features are there and the media has been synced to the device. However Apple doesn't want me to use the device like I want to use it, so it has been crippled. Way to go!

Another thing I noticed today with this app.  When I was listening to a podcast and then decided to make a call the app would stop the audio and let me converse. When I was finished with the call and hung up the podcast would automatically restart where it had left off. Today it just went to the background. The audio was still playing and very annoying as I talked.

For those who can see the playlist in the Music app but cannot see the contents of the playlist.

Force quit the Music app and relaunch it.

    1. Press the home screen to ensure you are out of the Music app.

    2. Double tap the home button.

    3. Press and hold the Music app icon in the running apps list.

    4. Touch the red - to force close the Music app.

    5. Press the home button to exit.

    6. Launch the music app again.

I had the podcast playlist problem.  My Music app now functions mostly as it did before iOS6.  I have also setup a new iPhone 5 and it is working as well.

I do only use smart playlists so cannot confirm if this works for manual playlists.

The full fix that I did is as follows.

    1. Delete the podcast app from my phone.

    2. Shutdown and Restart the phone.

    3. Force quit the Music app as above.

    4. Podcast Playlists now show up in the Music app and all of my podcasts are listed in the order that I had set them up in iTunes.  Syncing and updating of the playlists is also working as before.

I hope this helps some of you.

I'm pretty sure this only works with iTunes Match disabled.  Please, someone... tell me I'm wrong.

Match on or off doesn't seem to matter in my setup.  I can get a SmartPlaylist to show either way.  But I still can't get it to order on the devices using the Copy to Order right click. Still can't get a NON-SmartPlaylist to show.

Broke out an older iPod and gave it a try.  Same thing.  Investigating other discussions for iPod shows the same frustrations dating back to early v 5 with iPods.

The Siri trick isn't working for me either.  I spent a lot of time telling Siri "next" while listening to podcasts, trying to find the ones I wanted to hear.

There is a small goldmine waiting on the app developer who can fix playlists in their app AND who has a web interface to make a morning "rack & stack" easy, since trying to read each description on a tiny screen is too cumbersome.

rhkennerly:  and just to clarify, you can view and play a smart playlist of PODCASTS when iTunes Match is enabled, correct?

regarding your ordering problem, i don't know if it's the same thing, but the workaround for ordering smart playlists correctly is by creating a new smart playlist and using that to point to the original one.  This would copy in the correct order on device.  For example:

    1) You have a smart playist called Bubble.  (Bubble does not sort properly on device)

    2) You can rename Bubble to Bubble (orig)

    3) Create new smartplaylist and call it Bubble.

    4) Create one single rule:  Playlist is "Bubble (orig)"

    5) Copy new Bubble to device and it should be sorted properly.

Again, not sure if that's what you are going for, but maybe that would help someone else anyway.

yes, iTunes match doesn't seem to affect my playlists of podcasts at all, on or off.

I've tried this solution a couple times before, and for some reason it doesn't work for my iPhone or iPad.

Sometimes I wonder if I've got a software switch thrown in some obsure setting that keeps my phone from acting like everyone else's.  dunno.

Thanks, this worked for me. I have to turn off iTunes Match for it to work, but that wasn't as big a deal as losing my podcast playlist.

Success!  Finally.  I was missing ONE piece of information: Turning off iTunes match on your computer is not enough.  You have to disable it on your device as well.  I also switched from iCloud backup of the device to local.

    remove the podcast app.

I turned off syncing podcasts in iTunes, backed up the device to the HD, and then turned syncing podcasts back on in iTunes and synced the device to my computer.

Turned off the device, rebooted and it works, both SmartPlayLists and Regular Playlists.

But can you download new podcasts?

Yes!  I can download.  But I'm downloading and then syncing from iTunes on my Mac.  I just plugged up my ifon 4s and it synced with new podcasts.

Awesome!  But what happens if you turn iTunes match back on on the computer?  What about on the device?  Does the playlist go away?

I don't think you can on the device.  The couple of podcasts i did download while trying to make Podcasts the app of doom work appeared in my regular Music app after getting rid of the Podcasts app, but iTunes on my ipod touch won't download podcasts, it tells me i have to get the app, which isn't happening again any time soon.

Frankly, I'm not going to find out what happens when iTunes match is turned back on.  The opportunity costs of dicking around to fix this problem has been equal to about the cost of half an iPad.  I just couldn't let it go, be beat by a machine.  Brute force repair, not elegant at all.  **** Apple.

If you need to get Music to play your podcast playlist after playing something else, try using Siri (or Voice Commands on the iPhone 4) to play the playlist by name. It seems to be the only way to override the "hide podcasts in music" setting so you can listen again.

Your solution worked great, once I rebooted my iphone.  The podcast app is gone, and my podcasts are back in my playlist in the original music app. Thx! Rob
