Q: 5.1 Surround Sound on Macbook Pro 2011

Welcome to the forums. Have you considered a usb to 5.1 Surround Sound adapter? such as Mirus USB Audio Adapter, 5.1 Channel Surround Sound? -

This particular USB sound card that is suggested will work on a Mac but it will not give you 5.1 support. You will only get stereo output. For 5.1 support you could use this one

which will give you the full 5.1 surround sound that you would like to have.

The Airport Express and the MacBook Pro stereo mini ports double duty as optical mini ports.
All you need is a standard Toslink optical cable and a optical mini adapter

Enable theater/concert like effects to turn the stereo sound into surround sound and your in for great music enjoyment.

i just have 2 questions regarding this
1) is there any configurations i need to do on my book pro retina to benefit from the 5.1
2) do you have an idea what the cables are called in the market besides optical audio cable cos unfortunately i am traveling and would like to ask around about the cable and adapter to find it in local storesthanks again for your time and your answer helped alot

(I do not know if your computer has the capability to do 5.1 output)

I have a MBP 2011 model with OSX 10.7 installed in it. I use the toshilink optical cable to connect to my 5.1 but I am not getting the surround sound. The 5.1 option in MidiSetup is not enabled. Can anyone help me out plz. Thanks.
