Just got mine replaced (3 months ago) for a Black 2006 MacBook. I did take it to an Apple store (make an appointment first) and they'll replace it for FREE, they did for me.
BTW, there was a Apple recall for the bulging battery's (not sure if there still is).

thanks for that -- I spoke to an online mac guy, and he insisted that this was "normal" wear and tear, so Apple would not replace. But the battery works fine -- just bulging and hot -- fire hazzard; but they say they won't replace -- no store near me -- makes me sad. I love apple products and have lots and have always had good service -- tonight was not good service and leaves me sad:(

If you have a MacBook with the removable battery you can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.
Or for $129 from The Apple Store http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA566LL/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
