Been advised to come to apple store in chadstone - melbourne - australia to get a replacement but sadly after 45 driving I have been told the battery is faulty but can't replace due to no stock. How bad is that. Tool 1 day of work to get this. That is very poor service.

Also another problem, Siri is not working on turn by turn navigation.

with my original one, the Apple Genius said diagnostically, there wasn't any issue with my phone and or battery components, but for some reason or another it wasn't getting anywhere near the amount of time it should have. I have tried every variation of restore, DFU reset, restore as new phone, GET a whole new phone...all to no avail. At this point I'm satisfied attributing it to either the software ( I hope so) or just a bad call on Apple's part (which I can't imagine anything would have ever made it out of the production line by the millions if that were the case).

    @MIB
Did they say they would call you when they get stock?

I've an apt at the Sydney shop (luckily opposite work) but I am not expecting them to have a replacement.

I'll be impressed if they argue this performance is normal:

A quick update on my DFU restore performed this morning.

There's been a dramatic increase in battery longivity after performing the DFU restoration. It was my intent to grind the battery down this evening, but I don't think it's going to happen. I spent the afternoon browsing, making a few calls and streaming music via AirPlay to my Apple TV; and as of 8:pm ET I still have 42% remaining. My usage stats are:

    - 5hr. 3min. Usage

    - 8hr. 2min. Standby

I'm conviced that if I used the phone this much prior to the DFU restoration I would be far below 42%. Even heavy usage days on my iPhone 4 would leave me with about 20-30% by bedtime, and it looks like I'm approaching those stats now with the 5. I'm going to let the phone sit overnight sleeping without charging. Curious to know how much is left of the 42% by morning.

    Will post my results.

my stats are following a DFU, setting up as a new phone with practically no apps.
all settings mentioned here are basically off.

i'll be surprised if i get 5 hrs out of it today.

i used to think that it was a sw issue but if so how can we explain all the positive battery comments?

Usually don't post on the discussion board, just read for info.  However,  my battery experience has been much the same as the numerous post listed in this thread and others.   Minimal use and quick battery drain.  In my case, the battery seemed to expire more quickly in standby mode than with regular use. I did let it die completely and do a full charge.  This seemed to help somewhat but only initially.   Of course, I have Bluetooth off, all but 2 or 3 notification are off, push is off, etc, etc... but still I watch my batter tick down too quickly.

So tonight after work, I did a complete restore and set up as a new phone.  I used iCloud to load my contacts and calendar info.  I downloaded all my apps from the apps store instead of using iTunes.  After this was completed, I began arranging my app icons.  This is where an inexplicable thing began to happen.  I would move an app icon to a different page, and then the phone would automatically shut down with the apple logo coming up and the screen dimming very low.  I would have to turn it on and off to get the screen to normal brightness.  This happened numerous times and then suddenly stopped.  So now, the phone seems to be working okay, but how weird is that moving an app icon would cause the phone to restart and screen to dim?? Needless to say, I have made an appointment with my local Genius Bar to tell them this story and to look at the phone.

So, Apple riddle me this-  How does a company (the most valued in the world) release a product (phone or OS) with these types of issues?  Frustration is high almong us Apple loyalist and your competition is very high in the cell phone space, so please acknowledge the issue and fix the problem.

    you sound so surprised!

    launch issues are the norm.

    remember 4's antennagate?

apple took months to acknowledge the issue saying "don't hold it by the left hand corner!"

    welcome to batterygate.

grab a ticket and wait in line.

I called AppleCare this evening. They informed me that it should be expected that my iphone5 has less than half the battery life than my 4. After all it has a bigger screen. Then they sent me the email containing tips on conserving battery life I told them I had read several times over the years and told me to run along. The arrogance is something to behold.

I'm not even going to mention the fact that my battery dropped 8 percent while talking to them and when I mentioned that at least I could make 10-12 calls a day they thought that was fine. He also mentioned that maybe my phone has a battery that will last a long time under the 20% mark thus enening things out.

Good lord. Show some integrity and be straight.

    Sigh.

My phone. As many is experiencing the same battery drop. I've spoke with apple care today, and they didn't put up much of a fight and are replacing my phone when I read them my stats.  I know people who have the iPhone 5 and are not having these issues.... So, who knows. I'm just glad they're addressing my issue. Now lets see if the replacement has the same issue! Ha.

@mrbr1ghtside: I called before came in. Well too bad, but I finally got it resolved now. Cancelled my contract with Virgin Mobile as they have fail to delivery the promise. Came back to Apple store and signed up for a contract with Optus. I have checked everything at store before go home and so far everything is good.

Correction on my previous post, someone in Apple store just show me that turn-by-turn navigation hasn't been activated for Australia until Oct this year so it wasn't a fault. Only Battery issue and the Scratch issue.

They run some diagnostic to find out the battery faulty.

Ok-This is the last time I am posting this so pay attention .  The problem is in the restore from icloud.  Someting happens that carries over and cause the batterie drain.  When I called Apple Care, they told me to do the following and it worked!

1-Back up your Apps to iTunes to save time later

    2-Reset Phone (Delete All Content)

3-Set up as a new Phone

4-Input your iCloud info to restore your contacts

    5-Reconfigure your email accounts

6-Either Sync your Apps back from iTunes on your computer, or go the the APP Store and redownload  them from the purchase section (I reccomend syncing to a computer then restoring (all done in itunes).

7-Condition your batterie-Drain it all the way down to 1% or better yet, let it just die completely.  Then let it charge fully.  This fix works and it works well.  I went from very frustrated to extremely happy (although it was a pain to go through setting up as a new phone but I made the mistake of not syncing my apps to itunes on my Mac and had to download them all again.

Note:  Once you do this you do not need to shut down any apps or or change any settings to restrict the functionality of your new device.  Be coincious of things that do drain your battery like email push-unless you need your email more than every 15 minutes, set this to off and use fetch to get you emails.  Adjust your screen to the lowest possible setting that works well for you and set the auto brightness feature.  Also, if you really want to scale back, then slow down on the apps that use push notifications such as facebook, reminders, etc.  I am now able to make it through the day without a charge...am losing about 1-2% for a 30 min phone call, and feel this has at least quadrupled my battery life.  For more info see my other posts and conversations as they provide some other basic info as well as testimonials from other users who tried this and got great results.  It works.

Also, I notice all of you like myself were there getting this device day 1.  Didn't you expect something to be wrong? Apple will have a patch out in a couple of days and you will love your iphone again.  Follow my steps and you will love it faster!

Hot spot drains your phone faster than anything.  That is why they sell the hotspot boxes and that is exactly how they advertise them...."stop wasting your batterie and get super fast wifi connections without draining your phone"
