went to the genius bar today.
i was greeted by a very helpful guy 'Chris'.the first thing he did was check the IMEI.
(conspiracists would argue they know which IMEIs come with the dodgy chinese batteries..)
he then ran the battery diagnostic mentioned above.
this is a more elaborate in depth statistical tool querying phone usage.
he immediately said he would replace the phone and went at the back to check if there were any in stock.
2 minutes later, he arrived with a new black 64GB phone - 'the last one, would you believe'- he said.
the only difference to my previous one is that the sleep button is a lot looser - it rattles when you shake the phone close to your ear.
I don't really mind as long as the battery life is acceptable - ie. one full charge per day.
started at 68% out of the box.
i asked whether I should go back should i get less than 8 hrs on a full charge.he said 'definitely'.
PS dude to my right was there because of an iphone 5 battery related problem.so was the girl to my left.

i agree with your comments.however, some of us have been experiencing bad battery drain despite following steps 1-7.
it is not a definite solution. it worked for you and many others but not for me. -

Sep 26, 2012 11:38 PM in response to holdregeby Joules1969,I cannot for the life of me understand how to stop my iPhone 5 battery from dropping like a stone when I have EVERY possible life draining source turned off!!!!!!!! What on earth is happening???? I look at the screen albeit putting the screen on to the darkest setting to preserve battery fall by 1% literally every minute!!! I waited 2 years for this phone and TBH I WISH I HADN'T BROUGHT IT!!! It's the most disappointing purchase I've made in a VERY LONG TIME!!!!
Come on apple !!!!! As my patience is faultering and the Samsung is looking all the more attractive!!
iPhone 5, iOS 6

Sep 27, 2012 2:10 AM in response to sjsuttonby sjsutton,Another quick update on my DFU restoration.
Hit the sack last night with the phone at 38%. Left it on the kitchen table and awoke this morning (about 7 hours later) with 34% remaining. Now my usage/standby number since my full charge (post DFU restore) are:
- 5 hr. 50 min.. Usage
- 17 hr. 5 min Standby
This with 33% remaining. Push is on, and since I'm subscribed to this thread, lots of e-mails got pushed in overnight along with audio notification (typewriters).
To put these numbers in perspective, here are my stats of Monday, prior to performing the DFU restoration:
- 5 hr. 30 min. Usage
- 14 hr. 0 min. Standby
9% Battery remaining
Certainly an improvement, but again I will cycle through a few charge/discharges and note any improvement.

Sep 27, 2012 2:19 AM in response to holdregeby Michaell1964,I have had my iphone 5 for 6 days now and I am sick of recharging it already I have had an iphone 3gs then a 4s and now the iphone 5, I charge it overnight but during the day I have to charge it maybe once or twice,,
I text regularly but don't call a great deal.
I was tossing up between the iphone 5 and the samsung galaxy 3 but chose to go the iphone.
maybe I have made the wrong decision I am not happy about it.

Sep 27, 2012 3:00 AM in response to holdregeby Christopher Soh,My Iphone 5 has been good so far. It has been on standby for almost 44hrs and its at 28%. Been using it to surf the internet and check my Whatsapps. As with 4S, I've turned off all unnecessary notifications. Battery life is so much better than 4S.

Sep 27, 2012 6:07 AM in response to spyd4rby whitewater2,spyd4r,
I would try turning BlueTooth off and see if that helps anything. I have noticed that BlueTooth for me was causing a lot of battery droppage.

Sep 27, 2012 6:11 AM in response to whitewater2by spyd4r,I would hate to think i would have to manually manage my Bluetooth settings. This is my first iPhone and while i know it's no iPod Touch.. i would use my iPod touch and always just leave Bluetooth on and it still had fantastic battery life.

Sep 27, 2012 6:23 AM in response to sjsuttonby whitewater2,I think this whole thread shows that there isnt really one thing that has helped people, its more or less just a crap shoot and somethings have worked for some, while not affecting others at all. This is what I did, and seems to helped since I was restoring from a backup from an iPhone 4.
Step 1. Go into settings. General. Reset. Reset network settings. Phone will reboot. Improved my WIFI connecting issues.
Step 2. Go into settings. General. Reset all settings. Phone will reboot. (this performs the above step also, but I did it anyways.)
Step 3. Backup phone.
Step 4. Restore phone
Step 5. When restore is complete stay connected to computer and do not hit restore from backup but leave computer connected on the restore from back up screen.
Step 6. Skip all the steps on phone and set up as new. When home screen appears. Click on restore from backup on computer. Wait.
- After I did that. 2 hours 0 min standby, Usage 21 min, still at 100%. On WIFI, LTE disabled. Made 1 phone call, sent text messages, checked email twice, sent email.
- Light usage, noticed weird drops in percentages, was down to 80% at bed time.
- Over night, 13 hours standby total, was at 72 percent. Used phone for 5-10 minutes of web searching, lost 6% lol...on WIFI...***!!
- Still seems better than before, but it sounds clearly like an io6/iphone 5 issue as my iPhone 4 with iOS 6 battery life is great.
- Other issue: IOS 6 Bluetooth Audio no longer works for me on my iPhone 4 (prior to GM it worked) nor has it worked on my iPhone 5.
-
Sep 27, 2012 6:22 AM in response to spyd4rby whitewater2,To be honest with you, you normally dont. I think its an IOS issue just like when the iPhone 4S first came out with iOS5, 5.1 fixed a lot of battery issues with that hardware. I am hoping its a software issue and not a hardware which I doubt.
AutoBrightness does not work correctly for me, that could be causing some battery drainage also.
