Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

    @whitewater2

I thought the same thing with auto brightness..

turn it on, go in a dark room then go somewhere sunny.. you'll see the slider move.. (slowly)

also, Bluetooth Audio is fine here for me, I stream my music to my car ever drive to work with a Bluetooth Stereo Gateway from BlackBerry. Works perfectly for me.

    Just an update:

Last night I was loosing around 1% every 2 minutes and the phone was very hot.  That was with it in standby and all apps closed, no wifi or Bluetooth on.  I reloaded the OS and then installed my backup as directed to do by Apple Support.  This made no difference and I the  made adjustments according to Apple's iPhone Battery recomendations.  Still no great difference.  I noticed I was still getting Facebook notifications depsite disabling them in notification centre.  I then went into the Facebook app itself and discovered a whole pile of notification settings within the app.  So I turned these all off.  Charged the phone up to 100% and since then my battery is lasting a lot longer, and similar to my iPhone 4.

    Its now sitting at 85%

    Usage 48 Minutes

    Standby 15 hours 48 minutes.

So maybe the Facebook app has something to do with folks battery problems.  It was maybe coicidence but it certainly has made a change to mine.  Instead of losing 1% every 2 minutes I am now loosing 1% every hour.  well That is a lot better :-)

Just thought I'd post a little update for everyone with my usage statistics for the last 18-ish hours. I previously posted last night that battery life was no better with the replacement phone I received from Apple BUT these usage statistics imply differently. not quite 2x as good as with my initial iPhone5 I received last friday but usage stats.pngMUCH better than I was seing with my initial phone the last couple of days. still at 50% battery with 4.5+ hours of usage and almost 18 hours standy. I can live with it at this level but look forward to any software update that may come from Apple on the issue.

I just wanted to give an update...

I deleted the Facebook Messenger app and I disabled Bluetooth, so I am not sure what the solution was.. but my standby battery is WAYYYY better.. before it seemed like it wasn't saving battery while in standby.

I've read all the above as, like others I have switched for the Iphone 4 to the 5 and noticed immediately how bad the battery life is on the 5!

It's all very well turning off this and turning off that and not using various apps, but hells bells, isn't that what the Iphone is for?

I'm really peed off about the bad battery life, so much so, that I'm evening thinking of switching back to my Iphone4 which had fantastic battery life, even with everything turned on!

So, now what do we all do?   Any news on an update from Apple?  Am I to be one of the many who queue up at an Apple store to get my new Iphone5 changed for another new one, only to have the same problem?

    Spydr,

Thanks. I realized I had the Messenger App installed, deleted. I rarely ever use it. I will see if it makes a difference. I have read multiple people stating that the Facebook App and Messenger App has been related to battery killing.

If it is an IOS issue, they will issue updates to address battery issues, just like they did with iOS5. They tested ios6 with developers and what not, but majority of the testing occurs on peoples actual phones, such as iPhone 4/4S, not the 5 specifically (unless they leave it in a bar) lol. So, I would be intersted to see what happens when iOS 6.1 comes out and what it addresses.

So i posted a day ago on my same battery issues after doing a DFU reset.  Things are better but i don't believe that it's still where it should be.  Last night i started to realize something, my screen doesn't dim whith auto brightness on.  So i started doing some research on this and apparentley this is an issue to that alot of people are having and i'm wondering if the two aren't connected.

I tested my phone going into a dark area and turning my phone's auto brightness on and off nothing changed.  I would say that would impact battery life if it's not working correctly right?  But with that being said is this a software bug or a hardware issue?  Any thoughts if the two are related?

    After overnight charge to 100%

    4 hours 38 min usage

    14 hours 44 min standby

    1% battery then dead.

    Light use.

I think there's an issue with my battery too.

100% charge overnight, unplugged the phone at about 7:30am, phone was dead by mid-day.  Very light use of iMessage, email and web browsing.

Strange that the auto brightness has been mentioned, as when I toggle mine on/off on the iphone 5 there is hardly any difference at all.  I just tried the same thing with my iphone4 and the difference is really noticeable!  It didn't occur to me that it could drain the battery but now I'm wondering  - and wondering why I got sucked into buying the iphone 5 at all!

ShemanC is right. Try turning off Safari sync in Icloud. My battery has started to improve after this. I would loose 1% on standy every 20 minutes, now its been over an hour and light usage and only lost 1%.

Will update tomm after a full day of use

Just picked up my iPhone 5 64gb black on Sept 25.

    Sept 25th usage

    6:00pm picked up phone

7:00pm restored from backup on itunes.

    7-630am

phone downloading music from itunes match plugged into charger (itunes on cellular is off)

    Sept 26th usage

6:30am: unplugged from overnight charge charge is 100% check email phone on standby @ 100%.

8:05am: Co-worker asks to see my iPhone. Have not turned it on at this point since unplugging in morning. He says "its kind of warm" which was weird. Check the battery and its at 83%.

    12:30pm:

I had left it on standby and it was at 4% by this time.

12:45pm: after phone shut off I plugged it in to do a full charge.

4:15pm: unplugged phone turned off wifi, LTE, bluetooth, push

    data, location services, and notifications.

5:15pm: after driving home and 0 useage phone is at 81%.

setup as new and then I restored backup from cloud which took about 4 hours and then the app restore started.

    Sept 27

    6:27am unplugged from charge.

8:16am after driving to work no use at all.

    usage.PNG

Whats throwing me off is the "1 hour, 48 Minutes" of usage.... so something very power hungry is running while in standby is my take. Wifi/LTE are off.

8:48am: while writing this post took 1 screen capture and emailed it and responded to 1 imessage. 58%.

Its been going through 18-20% per hr while on standby.

I will try and set it up as new again and not restore from a backup to see what my usage is tomorrow.

I did a DFU reset and took icloud sync off Safari. I dont have LTE in the UK yet so still using 3G network. I am using it a lot more than yesterday and its holding up better but its still really power hungry. Im at 61%. Standby is at 10 hrs 19 mins and Usage (which is horse s**t btw) is at 3 hours 7 mins. Definately not used it this much at all. Im going to cycle the battery to nothing tonight then do a full recharge and see how I get on over the weekend.

hoping that iOS6.1 will address these issues. Again, it was common amongst iPhone4S owners complaining of iOS5 when it first came out.

Anyone else notice using iMessage burns up battery? Yesterday and duplicated today using imessage sending texts only, I lost 7% in 19 minutes using imessage sending to two diff people. Today, lost same amount in same period. I am wondering if iMessage is doing some type of sync checking to the servers to sync up my conversations with my other devices (mac, ipad, iphone 4). This problem does not occur on my iPhone 4 or with my girls' iPhone 4S with iOS 6.

    - Safari Sync off

    - LTE Off

    - Passbook Sync off (just in case)

    - Removed Facebook Messenger APP
