Q: How can I retrieve my QuickTime 7 Pro key? I can't find it in my order history.

I noticed that in resinatlling my system, I had forgotten to re-enter my QT 7 Pro registration keys.

In the past I could retrieve them from my order history. Now the order history only goes back 18 months and despite what the support article says, it doesn't seem to be accessible from the account page.

Anybody had the same issue? Am I going to have to call Apple?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1), 2011 15" 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

Thanks, I tried this (as my message states), but that doesn't work for me. My Order History now only goes back 18 months, and I purchased Pro several years ago.

There used to be a separate section of Order History for downlodable software keys. It's now gone.

Wasn't sure if you had seen that article or not. I would contact AppleCare.

Apple will no longer replace lost QuickTime Pro keys, at least not for orders over 18 months old. If you no longer have the email with the key, you'll have to purchase a new key.

    Regards.

    Thanks, Varjak...

I received the same info from an Apple Customer Support rep. I'm not happy about it.

In the system, the Apple Rep could see the original order, but because it has been "archived," he was unable to retrieve the keys I had purchased and told me I would need to repurchase them.

I have no intention of re-purchasing something that I already paid for. The QT Pro keys were in my order history for several years and then disappeared without prior warning.

Had I been notified as an Apple customer that all order records more than 18 months old was going to be archived (and made inaccessible), I would have taken steps to record the keys in Evernote or somewhere else safe.

As it stands, I've now lost software in the amount of over $100 USD that I paid for (QT 7 Pro Mac, QT 7 Pro Windows, and the MPEG-2 player for windows).

    Grrrr!

I forgot to point out that the Support article which was updated in June 2012 still states that the keys can be recovered from my Order History. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2376

Apple not only changed their policy without warning, but they are providing outdated information on the Support site which implies that the keys can be retrieved when in fact they cannot.

It's bad customer service. As an Apple customer for more than 20 years, I'm disappointed in you, Apple.

No one from Apple hangs around here, just Mac users like yourself.

If you have installed Quicktime 7 Pro with a licence key before, it can be found on a previous installation (or from your Time Machine backup) at the following location:

    Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.QuickTime.plist

With Quicktime Player 7.app closed, copy the preference file located as above to the same location on your new machine (it must be the Main Library, not your user Library folder - you will need to authenticate with your admin password).

Or you can open the plist file with TextEdit or TextWrangler and you will see all your details there.

    Hope that assists.

OK, as a mac user for 25 years I have to say that this is one of the most pathetic things I've seen apple do. I own two copies of Pro. One I bought 4 or 5 years ago and one I bought a couple of years ago and as a long time loyal customer of apple, having purchased literally dozens dozens of macs over the years, they are going to tell me to re-purchase my serial!?!!?!?!?

OK, first of all, Apple is virtually DROWNDING in profits and yet they are going to nickle and dime their pro customers like this?

The person that made this choice is a greedy snot that thinks that it is OUR pleasure to do business with apple and not the other way around. This person needs their walking papers and I say that as a business owner and a software developer who, in spite of NOT having world record profits, can still respect my customers and their MONEY enough to go into an archive and get their serial for them. Maybe their "customer service" reps and I use that term lightly, are le tired of clicking buttons?

Anyway, I am just SHOCKED by this and had to make a statement. I have stood by apple during their worst times and as far as I'm concerned, they are starting to head downhill pretty fast and in a way that I won't stand beside.

So nickle and dime us for 15 bucks and watch yourt 20 year loyal users get sick to their stomachs and think about leaving apple for the first time in our lives.

As if iTunes and the literal lockdown and forcing of their users into little controlled observed apple boxes that they are trying to accomplish now wasn't bad enough.

    Ugh....disgusting and pathetic.

Making a statement here does not good since we're all just fellow users here. If you want to comment to Apple, use their feedback pages:

    Varjak,

That's pretty much who I'm talking to sir. I was just hot and I needed to vent because I had not known this until today when I was looking for my pro numbers. Fortunatly I keep a paper copys of most my serials someplace.

We are fortunate to have users that make suggestions like oz-macnut who  think of logical and brilliant methods to help people get back what they own and the fine gentleman did it for zero dollars. I wonder if they feel that their customers can just take that hit so they can save a few support bucks or what.

Whatever it is, it reaks of corporate slime and I want the old Apple back.

Thanks for the feedback suggestion. As a complait directed at them, that is indeed more logical.

    Cheers

In other words, Apple is leaving you no choice but to find a bootleg key online.
