I am having the same issue.
When my iPad and iPhone were on iOS5 they didn't disconnect from the WiFi ever.
Now that I've upgraded to iOS6 my iPad disconnects from WiFi after being locked for a minute or so. This is happening when unplugged or plugged into mains. My iPhone still never disconnects despite being on iOS6 which makes me think it's a bug and no intentional.
It is annoying and makes the iPad useless effectively as I get no notifications or emails when it's locked, I have to turn it on and check, rediculous.
Has anyone found a solution and has Apple responded at all to the issue?

I also have the same problem on my iPhone 4 since upgrading to iOS 6. The wi-fi drops at some point after the screen locks. When I unlock the phone it reconnects to the wi-fi and the iMessages all flood in at the same time, so I am definitely not getting notifications while the phone is locked. This problem does not occur when plugged into a power source.
I performed some network ping tests to my phone and on average 20 seconds after locking it the ping replies stop.
Looks to me like a change in iOS 6 to try and squeeze a bit more battery life out by making the wifi shut down!
My fiend has an iPhone 5 with the same problem. It certainly appears to be a software issue with iOS6. Never had this problem on iOS5.
Hope the next update is not far away.

I am just adding one more comment so hopefully Apple fix this issue in the next update to iOS6.
I first noticed this as to connect to my job's wifi I have to take an extra step to access it. I started to notice that after locking my iphone 5 and placing it in my pocket, leaving it there for some time and then unlocking it, it always showed LTE and never went back to wifi (unless I sign in again). This never happened with my iphone 4 with iOS5 (before somebody says that this is normal behaivor for all smartphones and iOS' versions).
I did run a ping test aswell to the IP assigned to my iphone and it consistently stopped replying after about 60 seconds (clarification: ping test was done at home where I have no issues connecting to wifi).
Agree that it is most likely a software issue but I am not sure if you are going to save battery life by stopping wifi and keeping 4G/LTE working most of the time. It will add to your monthly data usage though.

Infact I also think that it not save the battery, I have wifi on, data cellular off, and notifications activate, I think that when telephone is in standby it want connect, and if there isn't a connection, it discharge. Infact my iPhone, when it is in standby, lost 1% every hour. I want that they resolve this issue, because it is a big bug

I concord with you Dina. I see that my iPhone discharge without any use, is frustrating, also because without connection, is useless to have an iPhone

Hi, I am from India and also facing the same problem. When I lock the phone, after a minute, the wi-fi gets disconnected and I stop getting any notification. Even my push-mail stops working, What is the use of having a smartphone, when it can't get notifications and mails. Hope this issue is addressed soon.

Hi guys, I had the very same problem you are all facing, but now I have te feeling that the problem has been resolved. I did a restore of my iphone and reinstalled iTunes. Now when I lock my iPhone the wifi seems to disconnect after a while, but hitting the unlock button, wifi pops up right away AND I'm receiving notifications again. So I suggest you try to do the same and re-evaluate.
Hope it helps guys.

I have had the exact same issue and agree...it makes the iPad (and even my iPhone 5 when trying to save data) useless for communication.
This problem is really the true blunder of iOS 6, not Apple's maps!

B. Tim, I don't think anyone is having trouble receiving notifications after the wifi symbol comes back. The problem is that we cannot receive notifications immediately when they should come. Rather, we have to manually unlock the iPhone (5 in my case, as well as an iPad 2) in order to "check" to see if we might happened to have received an iMessage, email, etc.
