Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

Here is more stats of my imessage theory causing battery drainage...I feel like I am getting good battery after doing a restore, but find imessage killing my battery faster than anything else.

    At 2:08 was on WIFI..in a 4G area...started with 34%..imessage use only...

I sent and received 41 total imessages during this testing time period...all on WIFI connection..No other browsing / app updates / nothing running background / no location tracking. I took screen shots of each checkpoint, so that is one other thing I am doing but shouldnt be much power to do that.

2:11, went down to 33% (standby 20 hours 0 min, usage 5 hours 24 minutes)

    2:18 down to 31% ( standby 20 hours 7 min, usage 5 hours 32 min)

    2:34 31% (standby 20 hours 23 min, usage 5 hours 34 min)

    2:37 29% (standby 20 hours 26 min, usage 5 hours 37 min)

    2:37 28% (standby 20 hours, 26 min, usage 5 hours 38 min)

    2:41 27% (standby 20 hours, 30 min, usage 5 hours 41 min)

    2:48 25% (standby 20 hours 37 min, usage 5 hours 47 min)

wasnt using my phone, checked again...

    3:02 25% (standby 20 hours 56 min, usage 5 hours 56 min)

    3:03 24%  (standby 20 hours, 52 minutes, usage 5 hours 57 minutes)

wasnt using my phone, checked again

    3:13 23% (standby 21 hours 2 min, usage 6 hours 7 min)

It seems my usage is always rising by more minutes than I am actually using it. I wasnt using my phone from 3:03 to 3:13 and it went up 10 minutes of usage and standby.

I was told by a genius at the apple store upper west side/NYC that this is a documented issue - for iPhone 5's RESTORED from prior iTunes backups, many phones have had battery issues.

They tested my iphone5 and determined that the battery met or exceeded all specs.

There is a setting: General > Usage > Time Since Last full charge:

-- if the usage and standby times are identical, there is clearly a software issue. This was the case for me.

I was instructed to NOT restore from backup, rather I am to wipe the phone and treat it as new.

Email accounts can be "restored" from iTunes if Mail.app has them. All other settings must come from the cloud, or they will be lost. I will lose my text history and voicemail password.

I will have to tell iTunes what media and apps I want to sync and re-organize my apps. That's a royal PITA.

I'll report back if this solves things.

Genius said many many people have had this issue... but a full wipe and reconfigure from scratch will fix things. I'll report back tonight.

Another 5 owner. My battery seems to be going down abnormally fast. I've had every iPhone that has been introduced since 2007, and this one seems to be draining much faster than all the other ones. I have always kept my notifications to push, location services on, Bluetooth on, wifi on, cellular data on, and am not going to start turning everything off and on all the time. I restored from 4s backup, but noticed fast battery drainage, then I restored and restarted as new, but, still have the problem! We need a fix fast!!!

This is my first iPhone so mine was a fresh setup.

While my battery isn't great with Bluetooth off , maybe 5 hours usage. With Bluetooth on I see 1% drop every 2-3 minutes. There is definitely a bug with Bluetooth.

Isn't this supposed to be the low power Bluetooth 4?

Yea, it shouldnt be dropping that much.

Overall, I think they know there is a IOS battery issue, so I am patiently waiting.

Has everyone here configured their iP5 via RESTORE from a prior backup (either via iCloud or iTunes) as opposed to configuring as new? Apple genius tells me that if I configure as new (DO NOT RESTORE from iTunes backup) then this problem will go away and battery life will be as expected.

I KNOW. I KNOW this is not the answer any of us want to hear - but it may be the only way to get our phones to work. I'm gonna do this when I get home from work. Maybe a few of us should do this and report back...

I already tried that and it didn't work for me, even after all that trouble.

yes i restored from a backup from an iphone 4..

what helped me initially with WIFI issues and other things, was General- Reset- Reset Network Settings and then I also went in and Reset All Settings...erases your WIFI and general phone settings like wallpaper, ringtones.

I then made a backup after all that, and then restored the phone as new, then restored from backup.

but today i am doing quite well almost 22 hours 33 min, 7 hours and 8 min usage and still have 5% left. But i still feel like imessage and a few other things are draining the battery too much. See my other post about using imessage solely and having it drop a lot.

anyone seing usage like this, seems pretty darn good to me? This is almost 3-4 times better than before I swapped out my phone yesterday...same settings and everything installed on this as with the problematic phone I had. (push on, notifications, LTE enabled, BT on, fair to moderate usage, music on for several hours straight today):

I normally plug my phone in each night before bed so I'm up and running at 100% each morning. Didn't do that last night for the sake of testing the battery out fully today. Been running strong since about 3-3:30 yesterday afternoon.

dude..that is really really good.. I thought I was doing well lasting 24 hours, but that is really good! Only thing that ***** for me, is when I am at work for 11 hours each day, we only have 2G here, so my antenna is going crazy doesnt help my battery.

probably because your name starts with Mustang...

I am now firmly in the belief that its the Facebook app that is the problem.

I had it disabled in notifications, but when you log into the app, go to account settings, notifications and look at what the app is trying to send, it's no wonder that there are issues. I disabled everything earlier this evening and now six hours later, my phone appears to be showing serious improvement. Back to normal battery drain compared to all my older phones (4, 3GS, iPads etc), looking good so far!

This is the best battery usage i have had yet..

this was about 4 hours listening to  music, 30 minutes of that being over bluetooth.. bluetooth disabled the rest of the time. I am sure Bluetooth is KILLING it.. i see 1% dropever 2-3 minutes with bluetooth on.

I have tried everything from turning off all location base, notifications, email to manually for the last 5 days.....nothing worked. I deleted twitter and the facebook app to see if it was that...it's wasn't.  I slowly turned things back on over a few days and barely have a improvement in battery life but nothing significant to where I'm holding a 8 hour charge from minimal usage.  I then did a full delete and restore from icloud yesterday (when I first set up my iphone it was from itunes back up) and I had a slight improvement in battery life but nothing compared to my iphone 4 (still losing about 20% of batterylife every 45 mins).  I checked my cellular usage and it says that I have 11 days of lifetime?  I got the phone at noon on 09/21/12 which is only 6 days ago from today.  Image attached.

I'm taking in my iphone 5 into my local apple genius to get it fixed and hopefully replaced.
