Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

*sigh* I really dislike the idea of basically not using your phone in order to save the battery. Lol I want to use it for its intended purpose. I'm not expecting miracle numbers from the battery life. But I think 4 hours usage is not enough. For a brand new battery.

As far as the new restore, I know I can copy all my folders of photos but what about the camera roll specifically? Can I still get them back there?

Apple just sent me a survey regarding my call with them yesterday in which they sent me the same email information I told him I already had (about battery preservation).

*sigh*  I was honest and told them there is a issue but they seem uninterested.

Okay...Wow... So I called apple today to get a replacement phone mailed to me because my battery life was OBVIOUSLY not right.  Tonight, just for the **** of it I did a DFU Restore "Set up as new".  My battery has improved SO much.  It's like night and day.  It's actually holding charge while it's on stand by which it was NOT doing before.  This is my usage so far.  I doubt it's anywhere near great but its SO much better than before.  Usage: 59mins Standby: 1 hr 30 mins Battery: 88%

That's not bad right? Facebook, imessage, twitter, 1 short phone call, email - screen brightness half way.

    LTE ON

Does that sound decent to you - or should I still send them this phone and get a replacement? Thanks guys!

    88% after only 1hr 30min? I don't think that's good at all

One should NOT have to do a DFU Resore under ANY cirumstances to improve battery life. That's like reinstalling Windows and losing all your data just to temporary fix a memory problem.

    Homer, you're not wrong...

But as my wife tells me: "Do you want to be happy, or do you wan to be right?"

If the solution to the issue right now is to do a full wipe, it's not THAT big a deal. OK, I take that back, It's a freaking PITA. I have 2+ hrs invested and I'm just getting close. My battery is now 100% and I'm ready to pull the plug. I'll report back soon.

I've got an iPhone 4 running 5.1.1. Battery at 97%; Usage = 21 minutes, Standy = 3 hours. For my phone that's acceptable. If I leave my phone on stand by all day it would only use about 3-4%

I too don't think 88% for you a new phone is that good, I'm guessing it's a new iPhone 5.

im not sure if im getting the battery life that im supposed to maybe i can get some opinions. i have done a set up as new iphone procedure as most have recommended, done 2 full battery drains....I usually have wifi off unless i need it to download an app over 50mb...LTE is always on, push for 2 email accounts, location services at a BARE minimum, no bluetooth, autolock after 1 min, contstantly closing apps in background when im done using them, autobrightness on, screen brightness at 40%. After all this i unplug my phone around 630am, since im at work it gets mild usage, about 20 min of angry birds on the train going, some texting throughout the day, maybe a 5 minute phone call once or twice a day, surf a few web pages, and maybe download an app, and by 4pm im at 30% this seems kind of crummy doesnt it?

This doesn't have ANYTHING to do with battery life unless actively using location services -- 99% of your apps can be loaded in the background and they will not use any battery.

I stand corrected, just was doing what i thought may help was trying anything at this point honestly, but based on my explanation that just doesnt sound like the right battery life correct? I timed it, basic while surfing on LTE, im averaging losing 1% every 2.5 to 3 minutes surfing

OK -- I used brute force... took 2 hours.

    1. restored to factory defaults;

    2. systematically synced apps, media, email and icloud accounts, etc... many, many settings.

Battery was at 100% when this was all done. I then started sending textx, emails, ordered my groceries from fresh direct app, used 10 apps for various things -- used Siri. Used dictation for texts and emails.

after 52 minutes of "normal" use - battery is at 96%

That's about what I expected. In comparison, today, 52 minutes of use would have left me at 45% or less.

SO the genius from Upper West Side's suggestion to wipe and start over so far seems to be working.

I AM A BIT TROUBLED THOUGH by the setting:

General > Usage > Time since last full charge:

is identical (1hr 3 minutes) -- genius told me that we want to see some delta here... these numbers should not be the same.

Hmm... I may visit the genius just to go over this and clarify. But so far, an hour of solid use using 4% is within my expectations (and not possible earlier today).

I urge anyone with this issue to wipe their phone and DO NOT RESTORE from your backup. Looks like something in the restore from backup is broken.

    Data point.

Just got my replacement phone. Haven't done a full cycle charge yet but the battery seems about equally bad so far. Makes me think it could be a software thing.

Also, I've tried turning off the email notifications from this community and yet they still keep coming, any ideas? I'm sure getting 20 emails an hour from this thread isn't helping things.

People don't waste your time doing restores.

I purposely set up my iPhone 5 as a new phone because I automatically expect there to be problems with back ups.

Yet I still get 5 hours - 5 hours 20 minutes maxium usage.

    (With nearly everything turned off)
