Q: Why do i get a brief black screen glitch after exporting in fcpx?

After i export a video from fcpx I seem to regularly get a brief black screen glitch on playback.  The balck screen appears for only a second or so.  This does not always happen at every export, but quite often.  It requires several re-exports for me to finally get a "clean" export that is ready to burn onto disk.  Is this a flaw in the software?  Is there a fix?

Final Cut Pro X, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 16 gb Ram, FCPX

Sounds like you might have some gaps in your timeline.

If you moved clips around using the Position tool and did not have snapping turned on, you can create gaps. These gaps can be only a single frame, which makes them hard to seen on your timeline, unless you zoom in quite a bit. But they will show up on playback. You should see them in FCP X as well.

One method of checking for gaps is to position your playhead at the start of the timeline. Then use the Next Edit key (comma or down arrow key) to advance through each edit. Backup one frame at each edit and see if the encounter a black screen. When you do, it's a gap you need to close. This works best with an extended keyboard that has the four arrow keys. Arrow down to next edit, arrow left and right to make sure there is no black screen, or gaps.

Or this could be related to the various issues people are having with final cut pro x exports.  search it on these communities and you will see tons more...i doubt its timeline if its only happening on some exports.

Thanks, you are exactly right. This problem only happens on exports about 30-40% of the time.  I am confident that the timeline is tight, no gaps.  Funny, but when i re-export a timeline, the black screen glitch can be in a different spot in the export...I will try to search the communities, but I'd like to know the fix on this, not just how other people are having the same issue !

I get that too - I exported a film for a client - it had two areas of black screen with dialogue. I ran through the timeleine, and while there was no black in the timeline, it played as black on the viewer. I ran the mouse over the area a coule of times and that sorted it, but it's a tad annoying in editing software to have to wonder whether things will suddenly disappear!

Thanks, I ended up reading on a blog somewhere else the fix:

    1. When done editing compeltely, exit back to the project screen and delete all render files.

    2. Let it rerender, then export WITHOUT making any changes.

This eliminated my issues of black spots and I can now get full 1080p exports.

    Thanks again.

Jimmy - I can't see the render files - sorry to be thick! Where are they?

    No worries David.

In the project library window (mine is on the bottom) select which project you just finished editing.  Then go to File>Delete Project Render Files and select "all render files".  It will trash them and rerender everything.  When it's done, immediately export and your glitches should be gone.

Hope that helps, holler of there's an issue.
